70/100Sometimes what you need is not dodge a bullet, but dodge a football to set you straight.Continue on AniListNote: I haven't read neither of the source materials yet, this review based solely on the context of the anime.
Well, this is a hard one to assess; I should be honest. "Dreaming Boy Is A Realist" offers you a seemingly simple yet smartly done trope that makes it stand out from the heap of SOL (slice of life) high school romance genre.
Usually, I'd refrain from writing a review for a series that hasn't been majorly impactful to me. Still, I feel like this story has something special mixed in that might resonate with the audience. What is it, you might wonder. Giving that special someone you sought to have a more intimate relationship with than just being friends is the special message of this series.
The characters may feel familiar because they are. An ordinary boy falls in love with that one girl who's "out of his league," or so Wataru Sajou thinks. His earnest and frequent efforts to woo Aika Natsukawa had been going on from middle school to the first year of high school. He's a determined boy who's lacking a bit of self-esteem. But what he lacks in that department, he makes up for with his genuine aspiration to improve himself to be "worthy" of the one he loves. However, his blind and constant advances leave a bad taste in everyone's mouths, yet he does not listen to those disdainful comments from others until that one fateful day when he...
Dodges a football?
Yeah, it sounds a bit off-handed, but I think it can be classified as one of those "what the hell am I doing?" moments that you might have experienced in your life too. And strangely, it works. But why it works is largely dependent on one seemingly secondary yet charming character, Kei Ashida, a friend to both Aika and Wataru. She somehow sees Wataru's relatively good intentions and genuine admiration for Aika. She acts as a wise intermediary to both of them to help them navigate through their conflicted feelings. She honestly is a good character.
If I have to be honest, Aika initially comes off as an unpleasant character due to her rapid change in demeanor after Wataru distances himself from her. Her frustration at not receiving the attention she seemingly disliked leaves a bitter taste. Conversely, Wataru takes a serious step, a step that is undoubtedly painful for him by putting distance between Aika and himself. He thinks he's the reason she's not more popular than she is because of him and his antics, after Kei points this to him. He does this, recognizing he may have pushed too far with his advances. This poignant moment reflects the show's greatest strength – its portrayal of the bittersweet realization that change was needed, even if it meant shouldering the blame. It's genuinely heart-wrenching. I must admit, I was able to feel how caustic of a feeling that was, and it was really heartbreaking. I feel like that portrayal was by far the biggest feat of this show.
So, if you're still on the fence about whether to watch "Dreaming Boy Is A Realist" or not, here's the gist:
- It's an easy watch with an immersive storyline.
- Character art is decent, but the same cannot be said for animation and environment.
- Voice acting is pretty good; it was pleasant to experience.
- Although it's a pretty overused genre and trope, it offers a fresh insight into interpersonal relationships.
- It will not change your outlook on life or leave a lasting impact.
I hope reading this will help you make up your mind or you'll find something you missed while you watched the show.
Best regards,
Jerkov.

70/100Sometimes it is better to convey your true feelings than stay quiet about itContinue on AniListThis review will contain spoilers for the series, You can scroll down if you are interested in the score I gave to this show.
I went into this anime with different expectations. I don't know why, but I just did. But I found something very different, and I am glad that it was different. It gives us an important message about life while keeping the story light-hearted. The problem this anime sheds light on is 'MISCOMMUNICATION'. This is my 2nd anime review ever, so please keep that in mind. With that let's begin...
This story introduces us to our main character Wataru Sajou who has been deeply in love with the main heroine Aika Natsukawa since Middle school. Even after getting rejected by her many times Wataru still keeps on suggesting she be in a relationship with him. This keeps on going until they become first-year high schoolers. Wataru realises that his way of confession is wrong and he can't just force his feelings on others. Hence he concludes and stops acquainting with Aika. I liked the route which this story took here. Usually in anime (especially high school romance) an annoying character remains an annoying character till the end of the story but Wataru realising that he is causing trouble to the girl he loves because of his actions and stopping immediacy adds a layer to his character, which makes this anime interesting for me.
After completing the First episode of the show, I was thinking "How will they make this show more interesting?" In my mind, Sajou was only a lover boy (Perception of the main character based on the First Episode) But the author surprised me once again. According to me, 70% duration of this anime focuses on the Sajou as a character. the story puts Sajou in different situations and shows us how he would react the these situations. Whether this situation be with the Morals and Discipline Committee or Student Council or Part time job or Senpai - Kohai relationship. Most of the time anime shows us what kind of person our main character is. Or what effect is he having on other people's lives? This anime also shows the reaction of Aika (who is no longer bothered by Sajou) to each situation Sajou is involved. I was not expecting it to be this unique in approach. But this is what acts like a double-edged sword for me. It sells itself as a romance anime but 70% is a character study of Wataru. And the writing isn't that complex like Oregairu or Bakemongatari. It's not bad, but it's not good either. It is mediocre. It almost seems like these situations were supposed to build up a harem for Sajou but the situations were too mature or serious for that to happen. The romance story only starts in the last quarter of the anime. Which made me wonder, why did they sell it as a romance anime in the first place?
I am the type of guy who liked tsundere at first but as time went on ahead, I started finding these types of characters very annoying. Unfortunately, our main heroine Aika is also a tsundere. As most of you must have guessed, Aika is the root cause of the problem in this anime. The 'Miscommunication' happens because Aika can't express her feelings properly towards Sajou which causes him to maintain distance from Aika. Which also forms the basic premise of this anime. I am not saying that Aika is a BAD Character. By the end of the anime, she redeems herself. She is quite likeable once you get to know her as a person. But that's the problem. We get to know her character very late in the anime. I did start to like her but at the very end of the anime. Her lack of screen time also doesn't help. It makes me very sad because I liked her character but I spent most of the time in the anime getting annoyed with her. But she isn't a BAD character. It's just a weird structure of the story which chose to show her backstory very late in the anime.
One thing I like about this anime is the relationship shared by the siblings. especially the relationship shared by Wataru and Kaede. In Episode one Kaede gets to know that her younger brother has given up on the girl he loves the most which was very surprising for her. Most of the situation that Wataru takes part in, happens because of her elder sister Kaede. Since Kaede is in the Student Council, she started giving work related to the student council to Wataru to keep him occupied. She was very concerned about her brother. This anime showed a realistic bond with siblings without making it weird. I respect it for that. I also liked the Situation with Mina Ichinose which also focuses on the bond of siblings. The Issue that Mina was facing is very realistic and I am glad this anime addresses it.
Let's talk about the romance aspect of this anime. As I said, the romance story only starts in the last quarter of the anime. The question is, "How was it?" To be honest it's pretty good. To think it made me look at Aika in a different light shows that it's a good love story. We are told that during middle school Aika's family wasn't doing well, which is why she rejects Wataru when he asks her out for the first time in the middle school. Watsu without being affected by Aika's rejection starts spending time with her. Aika also likes being with Wataru but doesn't know it yet. But when Wataru maintain the distance between them It is then she realises the importance of Wataru and starts being true to her feelings. She also Low key confesses to Wataru. Which made me like her. I really did like Aika by the end of the anime but I still have the same questions. Why was there a lack of screen time for the Main Heroine of the anime? Why did they make her so annoying at the start of the anime?
In the end, I would like to say even though I have some problems with the structure of this anime and I know that the animation quality was weird at some times but overall I did enjoy watching it. I did like Wataru and Aika by the end of the anime and I was satisfied with the conclusion of the love story. It's not the best romance, It's not the best character drama but think you will find something to enjoy here. Just as I did. If there will be a 2nd Season for this anime then I won't be watching it.
