40/100For Me? It's Incredibly Awful, the Pinnacle of DiscomfortContinue on AniListBy god, does this manga make me feel so uncomfortable. I'd rather not read about what a disgusting, lying protagonist who actually STALKED a girl. I'm making the personal decision to continue to read because I love cringeworthy stuff, although I understand it will definitely not be certain people's cup of tea. Here are my main problems with it:
1) Characters Only Act for the Sake of the Plot
I never understood what weak characters were until I began to read this manga and watch its anime adaptation. Everything that the characters do is only done for the sake of drama or adding to the plot. I feel like none of the characters have depth, and only act in a way that will make the story interesting. This story would be so different if was just normal and told the truth once in a while, instead of constantly lying when he really has no reason to. He's stupid for the sake of plot, not because his stupidity is part of an interesting character.
This isn't a character-driven story. It's like the author thought up a plot beforehand, thinking, "Hey, wouldn't be cool if this happened?!" and then thought "Alright, but I already have this written, so how do I force this to happen anyways?"
2) Weak as a Romance
If you're looking for a romance story, you have waaaaaay better options out there. I find that the tension feels forced. The chemistry between the first girl, Chizuru, and the protagonist Kazuya is uncomfortably one-sided. They barely have positive interactions. They don't get along. Kazuya is basically always arguing with her. Chizuru has keep reminding Kazuya of her boundaries since she is only a rental girlfriend. They simply don't get along, and that's what makes the "romance" aspect of this manga so unbelievable. If you've ever even been mutually attracted to someone before, then perhaps you might know what I mean. I can't imagine acting the way Kazuya does, even if I was in the same position with my S/O. There's better romance manga and anime (and other forms of media!) out there.
3) Annoying Protagonist
I can't relate to someone who perpetually lies and acts immature, especially when it comes to romantic endeavors. While a relatable protagonist is not necessarily a good protagonist, I should be able to at least empathize with a well-written protagonist. Instead, I feel scorn. By god, can't the man just download Tinder instead of shelling out money for a rental? I feel so distant from him. I feel like an angry god condemning this guy's sins.
That being said, I know that some people out there may relate to him. Getting romantically fixated on a certain person, then jerking out the pain away? I've been there. (Albeit in high school, but, yeah, sure.) But he is so so so desperate to the point that he continuously makes bad choices. Choices so bad that I can't understand them. He constantly lies to his family and friends to try and cover up his stupid mistakes. He is so much of a man-child that he fills me with contempt.
Conclusion/Summary
I dislike Kanojo, Okarishimasu/Rent-a-Girlfriend for its characters only acting to serve the plot, its poor quality as a romance, and its rage-inducing protagonist. People can definitely disagree with any of my points, but in my opinion, I can't enjoy it in other way than the same way I enjoy poorly edited YouTube "Cringe Compilations". This manga makes me want to shrivel up into a raisin and then get chucked into the lava pits of Mercury.
And for that reason, I'm going to continue reading.

5/100The apex of the word "Cringe".Continue on AniListThe apex of the word "Cringe"
After watching the anime and seeing a crowd giving hate to the main character and thinking they were exaggerating, I decided to take a look at the manga to see if the story would come to anything, I've seen similar cliché works of the same genre and if if I compare them with Rent-A-Girlfriend the other works are a thousand times better than that.
The story of Rent-A-Girlfriend tells of virgin student Kazuya Kinoshita, who was abandoned by his girlfriend, emotionally shaken, tries to soothe the emptiness in his heart through a girlfriend for hire from a mobile app. Then he meets his surrogate girlfriend Chizuru Mizuhara who seems like the perfect girl with everything he could ask for: great looks and a cute, caring personality. Seeing differing opinions on her profile after the first date, and still plagued by their previous relationship, Kazuya believes Chizuru is just playing with men's hearts and leaves a negative assessment for her. Angered by her client's disrespect for her, Chizuru reveals her true nature: sassy and temperamental, the complete opposite of Kazuya's first impression.
The main character Kazuya is the biggest problem in the work and the funniest thing is that there are people who think the character is REALISTIC, but he's just totally mediocre that in almost 200 chapters he's still the same idiot and without any attitude.
The female characters are not that good either, they only serve to make the plot move, Chizuru is the only one who manages to be the least worst in history. And when you think it can't get worse, the author just comes to me with this ex-girlfriend back to creating feelings for the protagonist, that's not even the point of the iceberg because the worst comes further ahead. Ruka is the culmination of how a character is forced and not to mention that it was for her to add more things in the story and I think that didn't work very well.
The author had chances to finish the work and not to mention that the ending would be much less bad, but what did he do? It created more stupid situations to drag the story even further. Rent-A-Girlfriend reminds me a lot of what happened in Nisekoi, the author simply had the knife and cheese in his hand, but he preferred to create another 100 chapters just to extend the story even more.
The author could easily make the character declare himself to Chizuru in a single chapter.
So, the work hasn't been so impressive? Well, I think the only good thing presented in the work is the Author's art, which is very well detailed, but a pity that the story is mediocre.

30/100I want all of the time I've spent in this back.Continue on AniListOriginally, I was a die hard Rent a Girlfriend fan. I'm not lying, I used to love this work so much for some reasons and I loved to rush between all the chapters. Then something broke What happened to a work I loved so much that now I hate it?
#How to ruin a story The biggest problem is here, the storyline and how it get treated. I had some problems with the start of the manga because I felt uncomfortable with it as it was damn CRINGE but later on I got used to it and started to love it because yeah, the first half (chapter 1 to 150) was something I loved. The climax, the suspence, the big plot twist and sometimes the stress of knowing what was gonna happen was really good to feel. But after that I'm able to say just one and only one thing : "the mangaka is still writing this manga because he wants to make more money than he should with it". The story could've had ended right half of a year ago after a certain arc but right after that everything started to fall. Poor writing, bad choices, no imagination and most of all, no willing to have a real story to tell. After that certain arc everything started to be useless, as the chapters before were useless and it was just a comedy in a theatre just to make people laugh and get emotional; now it feels just like there's money behind. Why is Kazuya so stupid? Why Chizuru has to be such an idiotic tsundere? Why is Ruka even still in the manga? What happened to Sumi, Mini and all of the other characters sold as important for the show? They are completely gone. What is even the point of trying something now? We are here literally to read some bad and poor written pages by someone who doesn't even believe in his work anymore. We are reading blank pages of nonetheless.
#Probably the most pointless cast I've ever seen This is a real big problem, a really big one. Every person in this manga feels like a hell of a stupid and playing with life. I truly cannot understand Kazuya anymore, what the fuck are you even trying to do mate? You gave everything for a girl and now you hold back again and again? Is this an endless circle? What is Chizuru even thinking of? How to increase her fee? How to show more body while going out? My God this girl is the worst character I've ever seen. After everything Kazuya has done for you, you are still seeing him as a customer and not even a friend? Ruka why are you even trying now, it's literally over for you and you were nice for the 30 chapters. And the rest of everyone? Sumi? Mini? The granny? They are worthless at this point, grass. There's only one character who still gives me interest to this manga and it's Mami somehow, she is the only interesting character to my eyes; but she's stupid anyway.
#Conclusions This manga better gets a wake up and have something better and new than this bullshit, it's an insult to the anime and manga world. Story : 4/10 Characters : 3/10 Arts : 8/10 Personal enjoyment : 3/10
