80/100Pretty good anime, poor ending. Spoiler-free review, with a quick section at the bottom about the ending with spoilers.Continue on AniListKoi To Uso, or LOVE AND LIES, stays true to its title. It is an anime about the protagonist, Nejima Yukari, trying to find love with his longtime classmate Takasaki Misaka, whilst pretending to the government and his family that he wants to stay with his assigned partner, Sanada Ririna.
Premise: 4/5
The basic premise is that, when a student turns sixteen, they are eligible to receive a notice from the Japanese government that assigns them a partner, whom they must marry (unless they dislike each other enough for it to be cancelled). I thought this was an interesting idea, something of a spin on the classic 'Betrothed to one person, but loves another' trope. It is a little outlandish, since it is set in what seems like contemporary, realistic Japan, but it is explained well enough within the world for me to accept it. Even though it's based in something of a classic story type, it isn't boring, nor is it particularly generic.
Story: 2.5/5:
It does a good job of keeping you until the end, and the pacing is pretty good: just enough happens in one episode for the story to remain detailed, without it being too much to take in. The actual storyline isn't particularly special; it's a little predictable, but still enjoyable. Overall, pretty average. I have to knock half a point off for the ending, which is probably the most disappointing ending I've watched in my rather small anime watching career.
Music: 5/5
The opening is one of my favourites I have ever heard, and I listened to it long before watching the anime. The ending is also great, and is actually pretty emotional to me. The insert music throughout is good too, and underscores the relevant scenes well.
Execution: 4/5
Most of the time, the visuals are quite pleasant, with good-looking cities, forest, etc, but nothing particularly special. The eyes are really big, which distracts me a little, but it isn't an issue. At times, character movement can look odd, but it isn't anything major. Voice acting is great, with a lot of emotion conveyed through the characters' speech.
Altogether, I would give it a watch. It does a good job of making sure you're invested in the characters, whether you support Sanada or Takasaki (or even a mysterious third character who I shall not reveal for the purposes of keeping this review spoiler free). It also keeps a refreshingly mature view on such a concept as a boy choosing between two girls, with little to no ecchi content, as well as light humour.
Quick talk about the ending in the spoiler tag:
Seriously, for such an enjoyable anime, I'm surprised at how they ended it. I appreciate that it would be difficult to have Neji choose definitively between Sanada or Takasaki, since it would have disappointed some fans either way, but I found myself experiencing nothing but disappointment after finishing it. I personally prefer Ririna, but I think it would have made far more sense for Neji to just choose Takasaki and be done with it, since that was his goal from the start. Then again, I think I would have been happiest if Neji had chosen Nisaka, since I ship that so hard, and Nisaka deserves some happiness. Either way, I doubt I will ever reconcile myself with it.

76/100Honesty can make any hard situation easier to bear X Easy issue can become impossible to fix if you lieContinue on AniListIntro
Lots of people talk about how messed up scums wish or domestic kanojo is - well, i wouldn't disagree - but comparing love and lies to it, it's nothing. This anime is a romcom drama which has to offer one of the most dumb and bad main male characters to be seen - i will hope that it was intention - i guess it is - but well, it's sometimes really annoying. Koi to uso is even, i would say, a fantasy to some extent - this is because of the system where every kid gets assigned a marriage partner at age of 16 in order to increase birth rates. This as you can guess, im pretty sure by now just created a lot of chaos between the main characters.Yukari Nejima
Yukari Nejima is the main male character of the series - and i must start by saying this. I can't remember seeing a worse, main male character in a long time - the only challenger would be the main character from Rent, a girlfriend. With that said, i believe this was intentional - as it made more sense at the end of the anime and in the manga aswell. Yukari Nejima was interested in a girl named Misaki Takasaki for five years. And once he confesses and gets his feelings returned - he receives his notice and meets Lilina Sanada - this is the main setup anime was focusing on. Yukari Nejima was dealing with his own feelings while trying to work out both relationships with Misaki and Lilina. There was one guy who helped him with this - Yuusuke Nisaka he is. I dont want to touch upon other characters before I conclude Nejima. So to conclude his character - he is not a fast thinker and thus has big issues resolving all the issues and uncomfortable events happening in this love triangle. This is also where the anime kind of ends - that's why i would like to say here that manga is more interesting than anime.Misaki Takasaki
Misaki Takasaki is one of the main female characters in the anime. She is the girl Nejima is interested in. As we said before, she returned the feelings to Nejima in the anime - but knowing the fact that Nejima would get the notice - she seemed to go into a somewhat depressing state. She didn't know what to do after - she couldn't decide between giving up or trying to make it work - with that said despite her being one of the main female characters - this is all i can say if i only take anime to appoint.
Lilina Sanada
As for Lilina, the assigned future wife of Yukari Nejima, she at first really hates the fact that Nejima is set to be her assigned husband, but as the time goes on, she builds an interest for him, she is able to understand Nejima well - she is also more open and honest with him than Misaki which seems to rather run away from the obstacles. That would overall make sense for Nejima choosing Lilina - well that wouldnt be the true Nejima Yukari. To my surprise, Lilina was even trying to understand and help him in situations with Misaki, something I feel like should be appreciated.
Yuusuke Nisaka
And only few words for a character which acted more like a support, he was a guy who always seemed to support and try to help Nejima, with that said he also seemed to be shy around Yukari... that left me wondering, are there 3 characters interested in Nejima? or am I missing out on someone else as well.
I cant tell you more because then i wouldn't be talking about anime but spoiling manga.. so again, if you want to know more details... consider reading manga aswell.
Maintakeaway
This is an anime i have a hard time thinking about - what would be a thing i would take from it - there was a lot of stuff going on which is just leaving me with a confusion, lets just pin point some ideas, one of them is for sure the value of honesty and communication - if i think about what i said previously - because Lilina was very honest and straightforward with Nejima - it resulted in them having a very good relationship despite knowing the situation and feelings they have, the other side of this is Misaki which didn't really communicate - we saw how their relationship was just falling apart in chaos slowly but surely.
Conclusion
If you dont mind messed up romcoms with a bit of crazy fantasy, this would be something i would surely consider watching. However if you dont like messed up stuff with sometimes maybe missing some explanation from the start then dont watch this (i believe lot of unexplained things here in the anime are in manga explained though). Thanks for reading.
