,
unexpected twists. Grand Blue delivers a whole lot of fun, with lots of beer. It's a perfect representation of how life can be unexpected. Like very unexpected, at least for Iori.Iori wanted to live a normal college life, and that's far from what he gets. He encounters the craziest characters, and soon after, he becomes one of them. On the surface, Grand Blue is a diving manga, where the group explores the importance of the sea, as well as the necessary requirements to dive into it.
I love every character and their interactions. Iori has a knack for honesty. Maybe too much. (Then again, she does have a nice ass)
All Grandblue is really is a bunch of people doing stupid stuff while having the utmost of fun, I've never laughed so hard at something more than I had with Grand Blue
Of course, this is just the main male cast we're talking about here. The female cast, well... They differ a little bit.
See, the female cast aren't as intense as the males, maybe except for one. But the others are more into the diving aspect of things.
Chisa Kotegawa is more into diving then anything else. She may be cold towards Iori a lot, but she has a soft spot for anyone who is interested in diving. She is a looker too 8)
When it comes to Grand Blue, it's not only comedy driven, but insanely character driven. Amidst all the comedy can come serious topics and tones where wise decisions must be made. Of course this isn't a central theme for Grand Blue, but when it does get to a serious tone, it does what it needs too...then goes back to comedy in the blink of an eye.

Grand Blue consists of a lot of over-the-top situations that for some reason just works as a comedy. Trust me, you'll have a good time reading this if you ever will. I love the manga to this day and I cannot wait for the anime to come this summer. It'll be a hell of a time.
Here's to the upcoming "Grand Blue" TV anime!

90/100A look at the theme of passion in Grand BlueContinue on AniListWhen you're feeling in the mood for a nice comedy manga, what do people usually recommend you? Maybe it's some classic school time joking around like in Nichijou or Daily Lives of High School Boys, or maybe the sex joke filled Seikotai Yakuindomo or the yakuza house husband irony of Gokushufudou. All these are great stories in their own rights and deserve to have a spot among the list of best comedy/gag manga. However, the manga that I think takes the place at the top of these lists is Grand Blue.
Now, if you want a summary of what it's about and some of the parts that make it so appealing for a wide audience, I suggest checking out the other reviews here for a basic synopsis of what it's about. The thing that I actually want to talk about is what Grand Blue does that takes it a few levels deeper than any of the other manga I mentioned earlier and what really captures my attention: its deep understanding of passion.
I really enjoy reading the manga that I listed above (except for Nichijou actually since I haven't finished it), but the thing about each of them is that I don't think I'd want to read them a second time. Yes they are funny, but that's about the extent of their appeal to me. There's nothing about the characters or story that draw me in and make me want to spend more time with it. That's totally different with Grand Blue though, and it's because of the characters. Each character in Grand Blue is really unique and interesting with their various mannerisms, designs, and most of all, passions. It doesn't matter if it's diving, little sisters or anime, each character is really standout with what they enjoy, and they want the whole world to know it. Their passions permeate into their daily lives, like how Kouhei wears anime shirts every day or how Chisa immediately perks up at literally any mention of diving. None of them are ashamed of what they enjoy, and that's something that our main boy Iori understands. Even if the more rational characters around him will question and find his friends strange, he never sees them like that. He understands how much everything they do matters to them, that it's an integral part of what makes them who they are.
This message isn't necessarily anything new or profound, but the way that it's expressed in this comedy manga is top notch. Because of the genre Grand Blue finds itself in, it's allow to have its characters be a bit more over-the-top in their passions than most other mangas would allow before it feels really weird. But despite how crazy they might seem, you can't help but feel a little jealous of them. I know that I personally don't like telling the world about all my passions. For example, I don't actually talk about how I really enjoy reading manga to most people because there is that instant stigma that comes from being a 'weeb', but if you couldn't tell by how many reviews I write, it's obviously something I really like to talk about. So many people have so many things to say about the things they love, but are too scared since they think they'll receive backlash from the people around them. And this can apply to any area of life, be it hobbies, tastes, political/religious views, ideological stances, etc. Grand Blue reminds us that, yes, people will look at us funny for the things that we enjoy, but they are an integral part of who we are, and that in the end, life can be so much more enjoyable if we accept that.
So to sum up, Grand Blue is my favorite comedy manga because it is so much more than that. It's not often that I can get a great laugh while getting to think about things that really affect my life. It's lovably passionate characters give the story life and really push it beyond the level of most comedies. So the next time you read or reread Grand Blue, take some time to look past all the great comedy and experience what it feels like to freely life out your passions.

96/100“The cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea”.Continue on AniListEver feel like taking a break from your heated life, sitting in that comforting corner of your balcony and reading a nice comedy which is heartful? Look no further than Grand Blue.
Grand Blue is a college/university humour manga series about the passion of diving into the alluring blue ocean. The way it's presented makes you lose yourself to the beauty of the underwater world. It portrays the themes of it to their very peak with it's lively cast of characters and memorable moments. There's nothing unique or much to the story as this is a slice of life. The manga takes us through our protagonist's uni life as he meets along new people, how they become friends with the most amusing of interactions and how they discover love for an activity which they were altogether new and unknown to.
The character cast in the onset looks very plain and generic but as time passes on in the story you'll find yourself getting immersed into their lives and relationships. Iori and Kohei are arch enemies when it comes down to getting along together but are an immovable duo when faced with any calamity or a common enemy. They are naive friends who transform into youthful ever drunk perverts, ready to strip in the twinkling of an eye. We also see our female leads Chisa and Aina as they slowly bud into amazing friends who can relate into each other's lives. And their senpai? They are absolute chads ready to go nuts at any given moment's notice. Iori's college friends are always up to stir trouble and plot each other's downfall in the most ridiculous of ways imaginable. What appeals to me truly is how each of these characters really stand out with what they enjoy, they are not ashamed of what they love and are passionate about their interests with others. Overall, the cast is extremely lovable and fitting for the themes of the story.
Nude rock paper scissors game along with some good oolong tea. Now, on with the comedy aspect of this manga and I kid you not it's genius in it's presentation. One thing which I often tend to see in these type of comedy settings is that the comedy gets exaggerated and overused to the point where it becomes unfunny or dull. This is not the case for Grand Blue as the comedy comes at you in the most unique settings imaginable which are unpredictable. The characters just go full out bonkers all the damn time and their reactions are strongly expressed unlike any other comedy out there. There's always a misunderstanding brewing and their layout is perfectly built up. The scenes are not forgotten by the author and later give birth to more trouble and comedy. This is the type of manga which will make you actually laugh your heart out.
Unlike many other comedy manga like "Gintama" or "Binbougami ga!" where there are walls of text which can get pretty absurd to read, Grand Blue's flow of text is pretty fluid and it's panelling is done great which makes it easy to follow. The dialogue boxes are well placed and lead in the right direction. It's a comfortable read to the eye. The art is simplistic yet very expressive and appealing. It suits to the atmosphere of the story. The diving moments are beautifully drawn which make them quite memorable. The writing is witty and imaginative. The author has done his research on what he shows and I'm always keen to learn something new about the ocean, food cuisines, places and many other things.
I would love to be in a club such as PAB and although the manga is about diving and comedy it teaches us quite a bit about life.
Grand Blue teaches us to be authentic. It conveys you to be true to yourself, speak your truth and live your values. People may laugh at our likings or passion but we must embrace them and accept ourselves for who we are and what we like for that is a part of us. However, one of the hardest parts about being authentic is recognizing that we are not perfect and our relationships with others are what which make us whole. Live your live to it's fullest and when in hard times, never forget that there is always a shoulder you can lean on to. Such is the moral and soul of the story. If you've read my review this far then I would be honoured if I was able to show you how great of a manga Grand Blue is. It's top tier comedy which every fan of the comedy genre should read. I can assure you as a fan of comedy that it won't disappoint and what's even better is how it holds a high reread value, it's something which I would reread and still enjoy the most out of. In the end, if there's one exclusive thing that this manga has taught me then that would be to always keep a lighter on me when hanging out with friends. And why so? You'll find out as soon as you start reading it.
