Thanks to his parents’ job transfer, Usa has to live on his own. The problem is, his new place is full of weird people, and the upperclassman he admires is one of them…? A teenage romance comedy that’s heavier on the humor, not so much on the romance!

80/100A character driven story that revolves around an eclectic cast of 'freaks' daily lives in the same apartment complex.Continue on AniListI have not read many manga over the years, but I decided to break down and read this one. In middle and high school I watched (and read a little) my fair share of romantic comedies, but not recently. I took a break because I was put off by the settings and ideas that did not really appeal to me anymore. In other words, I am now 22. A few years outside of the target audience for a romance like this, but as I discovered, never outside the target audience for a comedy like this (also some stuff is just plain cute).
I have a different perspective now. Where before I found myself enamored by the slow (often dense) progression a romance in a manga like this has, but now, I find it more of a hassle. The manga develops (primarily) the relationship between a shy bookworm girl and an outgoing nice guy. As one might expect from this kind of manga it takes a great many painstaking chapters before basically anything happens between the two. But this not for lack of content. The various side characters that make up the manga are truly astounding (in more ways than one). The eclectic cast of side characters includes: a masochist (male), an (almost) 30-year-old women who curses anybody with a shred of happiness, a ‘lipsticked’ 22-year-old college student (female) who is described in every sense by that expression, and a nice old lady. Never a dull moment in the Kawai Apartments.
And really this is what the manga did right for me. It managed to tie together the slow pace of the romance with some truly outlandish, atypical comedy aspects. Even as the jokes started to get old I found myself laughing and genuinely enjoying the various characters nonsense. It's good. And I found myself sucked into the slow romance aspects as the two main characters become the reoccurring end of a joke that played into the larger character dynamics.
And then it ended. The bonus chapters after the lackluster resolution still feel lackluster but the story does come together at the end. No spoilers but it’s cute beyond belief. Although I would have liked the ending to be a little more than cute. Overall, I really did enjoy this one and it was a nice change of pace from my typical reading. It was a pleasant surprise to read something that I know I would have enjoyed when I was younger but for different reasons altogether. 8/10 would read again.

100/100WHY IS THIS WHOLESOME MASTERPIECE ALLOWED TO EXISTContinue on AniListI just finished watching the anime a day ago, and I just finished reading the manga today at 12:06 on the 25th of November 2024. I really loved the anime, though sadly it only has 1 season and wasn't able to wrap everything from the manga. Though its understandable since they could only adapt around 25-30 chapters from the manga to 1 season with 12 episodes. But, I wished they made another season for it since the manga only has 94 chapters which could be wrapped by the anime in just another season or 2 more, especially the anime having a very decent animation. Wished it got the Saekano treatment and it would've been way more famous, sadly not all anime are very popular, but hopefully someone else also finds this hidden gem like I did.
I really love slowburn/slowpaced romance animangas since it shows us way more wholesome scenes of the characters developing feelings to each other. I started liking romcoms like these, ever since I've watched Saekano. Though the story of Kawai Complex is way different from Saekano, the vibe it gives me while reading and watching it is pretty similar to it. The Main couple having a slowburn romance while it also being comedy with some very wholesome interactions reminds me alot of Saekano. I really love Ritchan too, the way she started like Megumi from Saekano, without showing any much emotions and just being a plain girl, and actually started to show more emotions while the story and romance progresses is just so cute. I've had a thing for Kuuderes for a while now, since having a girl not showing that much emotions from the start and has their own world, but after meeting the MC, they start showing little by little more emotions, like shyness and embarrassment is just way too cute. It also shows us a character development of the Heroine which is a good thing, since most new gen romcoms dont have character developments that much nowadays.
I really also love the way how they dont make the atmosphere too plain, with adding a bunch of very well lovable side characters, especially like Shiro-san and Mayumi. Despite being a side character the author was able to give them a special relationship that most readers wouldn't have expected. Having a really great MC and Heroine is good, but we also need great side characters to fill those holes in the story that seems too plain.
I really love most of the side characters, though I kinda dont like takashi or whatever that guy's name is, since he tries to find a gap between Usa and ritchan even though knowing they are dating. He also pisses me of the way he acts especially being with Ritchan. The last chapter of the manga where they show his perspective and when he liked Ritchan, was kinda unexpected ngl. I thought they were gonna end the manga with a chapter where it shows everyone having a happy ending or taking a group photo together, or like the wedding of Usa and Ritchan. Though seeing him try to get in the way of Ritchan and Usa and getting rejected by Ritchan right away was very great. But he also had some small development in the ending too. But, even though he pisses me of, and was at the last chapter, the author was able to make up for it, by showing us Ritchan rejecting him and showing her loyalty to Usa. I love the part where she also copies Mayumi and calls Usa lol. This is why I love kuuderes, very loyal and very cute.
Overall 10/10, I love wholesome romcoms
