DESCRIPTION
This is the story of a man who has yet to realize what destiny holds in store for him….
In the distant future, mankind has lived quietly and restlessly underground for hundreds of years, subject to earthquakes and cave-ins. Living in one such village are 2 young men: one named Simon who is shy and naïve, and the other named Kamina who believes in the existence of a “surface” world above their heads. The destiny of these two starts moving drastically when the ceiling of their village falls in, and a gigantic “Gunmen” and a beautiful girl named Yoko, wielding a superconductive rifle, come from the surface. Together, Kamina, Simon and Yoko ride the mecha “Lagann” that Simon digs out of the ground, and fly up to the surface!
However, the surface is not the dreamland that Kamina envisioned. This world is ruled by the Spiral King and his army of beastmen. Kamina and Simon, along with their comrades, challenge the Spiral King in an attempt to change a desperate world to one full of hope for the future with Gurren Lagann!

50/100"Listen, Simon. Don't Believe in yourself, Believe in ME! Believe in the Kamina who believes in you!"Continue on AniListDon't get me wrong here.
I fucking LOOOOVE Gurren Lagann! For the past 8 months, it's been my all-time favorite anime. Everything about TTGL is brilliant including the plot, characters, music, and art, which Gainax had done an excellent job of making sure all of these factors were amazing. However, beyond that, I love the themes about evolution and ambition, two values which hold up very high to me. This show inspired and uplifted me, made me think about my life in a different way and made me realize the goals and dreams I had deep within me, that's how powerful this show was to me! But, let's not beat around the bush, this is going to be a review on the first movie, NOT on the excellent anime.
This movie is much like a recap movie of the first 15 episodes of the main series. But, it's not a recap movie like e.g the first two Madoka Magica movies. No, the Gurren Lagann movies include new footage and information that wasn't spread out in the main show. I'm going to try to spoil as little as I can, but an example in this movie was that they explored Lorgenomes backstory and how the world of Gurren Lagann came to be. There are many other things like that which get explained here. I think this is a great thing to do because even as amazing as TTGL was, there were still some questions left unanswered that left some wide gaps.
The purpose of these two movies was I think to fill in those gaps like f.ex who was Lordgenome or how the world of TTGL was made while also recapping the most essential parts of the story, which I think these two movies succeeded excellently at. There were quite an alarming amount of things that I hadn't noticed or forgot about in the main series e.g how Yoko came from an underground village with Dayakka, that the whole show was post-apocalyptic or that Dai-Gurren ship was originally enemy property which the gang had invaded.
However, with all that being said, there's not much else to take home. What I disliked about this movie in particular in how rushed it felt. It felt like Gainax knew they couldn't pack in 16 episodes worth of material in a duration of just two small hours, but tried to anyways. It's not as though they only included the most essential moments and the new stuff. No, they also diverged from the main series for the reason to alter the story, which felt totally unnecessary. This was most clear towards the end, where they try to defeat the gunmen.
To conclude, this movie succeeded in adding new and interesting stuff but failed in trying to bring its own thing, instead of just being obedient and faithful to its original source. The result was a mediocre movie which I won't revisit any time soon. But, wait! Don't watch this before the main series please! Watch these two movies AFTER the main 28 episode series, then watch these two moves. I would also recommend giving a lot of time between watching the series and the movies because then it will be easier to contrast and compare the two. Speaking of two, I will now go on to review the other movie!

80/100A (semi) recap movie with some cool additions! (No spoilers)Continue on AniListA (semi) recap movie with some cool additions! (without spoilers)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Gurren-hen is a "recap" movie of the first part of the anime, but some changes have been made.
The good things are:
- There a few extra escenes at the begin of the movie with great animation (of course it is Gurren Lagann!) about Lord Genoma and the antispirals.
- Modification of the battles between the Four Divine Generals, which result in a different but epic final. These are the most notable and important extra scenes.
- There is a new song at the ending from Shoko Nakagawa, the same singer of Sorairo days! It is really good! here it is:
- The animation is the same quality as in the anime, soooo... awesome animation! You know that ;) . You Yoshinari is a genius in mechanical desing and explosions.
- The old wonderfull original sountrack is still there. A great way of hyping the things up with the power of music but also creating a great atmosphere in the sad moments. Gurren Lagann has one of the best sountracks!
The bad things are:
- A lot of important parts of the story and awesome moments have been omitted. Really important things! this means that a lot of context, information, and quotes are missing. It is a shame :c because this anime has some awesome quotes and they are one of the things which I love about it.
- Some characters aren not even introduce, is like a training montage.
- The final battle is reallyyyy short. Epic but short.
The conclution is:
Look, if you are a Gurren Lagann fan who already watched the anime some time ago and want to re-live the Gurren Lagann feelings and experience while also watching new content I really reccomend you this movie. I love Gurren Lagann and I really enjoyed it. Give it a go and pierce the heavens with your drill!
8/10 because the omition of those important parts but it is still Gurren Lagann (with some new content! <3). It is not a good recap but it is a good movie.
There is the second part of this movie called Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Lagann-hen. Check it out! ;) .

85/100The first movie is more of a recap than the second, but great regardless. Good supplementary material to the anime.Continue on AniListI think making a review now is perfect due to the 15th anniversary of the movie coming out in theaters, which I happened to see.
Gurren Lagann: Childhood's End (or simply just Gurren-Hen), is a movie version of the first-ish half of the 27-episode original anime of the same name, covering the journey up to the battle of Teppelin, but not actually covering that battle.
Due to it being a recap, the movie is essentially as good as the anime is. And because the anime is one of the best series I can think of, it's a great movie. My only issue is that the movie is a bit too 1:1 with the anime, and a lot of scenes that have serious impact on the story, like Kamina seeing his dead dad, is cut, and some general character building to make the emotional moments match how they feel in the anime. There are some movie exclusive scenes like the intro scene giving Lord Genome a more fleshed out background, even if he's not all that important in this movie, and the movie-exclusive fight with all of the remaining generals (and Viral) in some FFXIV Ultimate-esque, what-if-scenario, mega combining mech. Those scenes look absolutely amazing due to it being, well, made for the big screen.
That being said, some scenes still look really poor. Episode 4, specifically, was guest directed by a friend of one of the Gainax founders. The animation was received so poorly, that people complained, and then found out the guy fought back, saying the comments about the episode were "like putting [his] face next to an anus and breathing deeply." He then left the company. You'd think perhaps they would try to clean up that scene, but no, it just looks really out of place and clearly they reused animation. I mean, it's a recap movie, but come on. I'm not expecting Pixar/Studio Ghibli quality, but it feels a bit lacking compared to other movies in the same medium.
The animation is still amazingly done, regardless. The new scenes are incredibly hype, and the old scenes still hold up as being incredibly thrilling to see in the theater. Unfortunately, I didn't see this one in 4D, but there is a lot of people saying it nearly threw them out of their seats it was so wild. Honestly, if this was any other movie, that would be a complaint, but Gurren Lagann is all about being a thrill ride, so it fits perfectly to see it as such. Just unfortunate that, unless you live in a major city, you probably aren't going to have a convenient trip to the theater. Not even for the 4D version, just the movie in general. Sucks that so few theaters even bother.
Gurren Lagann is an amazing anime, and the movies are no different. Seeing them dubbed finally is a serious treat since they weren't dubbed for the longest time. It helps the dub is actually one of the better dubs in anime. But still, if you were to ask if you should watch the movies in lieu of the anime, I would heavily disagree. The movies are great, but better as a recap of the anime. And if you asked if you should watch this series, I couldn't possibly say yes harder.
