DESCRIPTION
After being threatened by extinction at the hands of alien invaders called the Zentradi, humanity undertook the task of guaranteeing itself a future by launching fleets of colony ships into space. On Macross Frontier, one such fleet, high school student Saotome Alto's life is changed forever: the fleet is suddenly attacked by unidentified creatures while he is performing aerial stunts for a concert by the wildly popular idol Sheryl.
Alto quickly finds himself in the cockpit of a new-model fighter struggling to protect Ranka Lee, a young girl he met only hours earlier, from the invaders' swath of destruction. Noting his performance during this incident, the S.M.S. Skull Squadron private military company invites Alto to join their organization, where he continues protecting his friends and Macross Frontier.

90/100A heavily underrated show. This anime is the definition of Space Opera/Mecha Genre done amazingly right!Continue on AniListStudio Satelight's Macross Frontier (2008) is probably one of the most overlooked anime at that date. Being completely overshadowed by the success of Gainax's Mecha Anime Gurren Lagann and the release of Code Geass R2 on that same year.
The Macross franchise has not been as popular among other mecha animes at that time, what originally started as a 36-episode show in 1982, featuring space battles with transformable fighter jets into Gundam-styled mechas, combined with a love relationship with a famous singer, the show definitely had something unique going on. While other shows like Macross 7, Macross Zero didn't really shine as much, and sadly OVAS like Macross Plus suffered the same fate.
Nevertheless, I am here to shine a light on this anime, which was definitely one of the most enjoyable shows to this date, filled with such amazing soundtracks, great animation and well-written characters.PLOT
The plot isn't entirely complicated, humanity has send large colony ships for expansion, however, they soon face alien threats, known as Bajiras, which compromise their survival. Following the Macross Universe, they fight these aliens with transformable fighter jets known as Valkyries. High-schooler Saotome Alto is dragged into this conflict after witnessing a fighter pilot of the Valkyries die at the hands of the Bajiras. He then soon enlists into the army as a sense of duty, arguably for guilt by not being able to save the pilot and due to the casualties in his first battle with the Bajira. Along the way, Alto meets a young and charismatic classmate known as Ranka Lee, who aspires to be singer like universally famous singer Sheryl Nome, who quickly develops feelings for our young fighter pilot. Thankfully, the story doesn't stick there, more than fighting the "alien scum" and getting the girls, Alto needs to develop the sense of protection, as he is admitted into the skull team, lead by Ranka Lee's older brother, who puts a lot of pressure in him. As well, he is dragged on larger conflicts, in which he will have to make decisions which may or may not decide the fate of the Frontier colony and the galaxy.
The Macross formula is very present in this show, and I commend the studio by going with something unique, continuing the story of Macross 7 in a more "2000s romance" way, but the good type of romance.SOUNDTRACKS
Highlight of this anime, listen for yourself.
-
Soundtracks are what makes this anime amazing, they help set the tone of certain scenes in such a unique way. Macross has always been about popular pop stars, and this anime is no different. taking full advantage of such talented voices like May'n and Megumi Nakajima. One of the strongest points of the anime set foot here, and one of the few reasons this show is one of the best in the Macross franchise; picking a favorite song from the catalogue is very hard at times.
ANIMATION
The animation can be pretty hit-or-miss for this anime. Animation of music videos or concerts which definitely help to emphasize the tone of music concerts in this anime are extremely well done. Nevertheless issues occur due to the heavy use of CGI for the Valkyries, giant ships and Bajiras and it sometimes not blending well at times with the hand-drawn animation and countable instances of reused animation. I commend the studio nevertheless for bringing animation that is never too distracting and definitely bringing some scenes which are very pleasant to the eye when it comes to fight scenes.
CHARACTERS
The characters in this show are filled with personality, very few characters feel stale and most have real motivations which drives them forward. The chemistry between characters is rarely forced and it's definitely a step forwards from other Macross animes. It would be hard picking a favorite secondary character as almost all get badass times to shine, you tell me which one is your favorite. The love-triangle between the main three characters is one of the best this series has seen, I'd boldly say that is even better than what the Macross Plus OVA had to offer.
CONCLUSION
Overall:
- Plot: 8/10
- Soundtrack: 11/10
- Animation: 8.5/10
- Characters: 9/10
I watched most of the Macross shows a while ago, and this one definitely is the crown jewel of the series. Macross Frontier is an almost-perfect mixup of what made the previous Macross animes special, going all-out with the soundtracks and the Mecha fights, taking good advantage of the technology at that time. Another thing to commend is that this show works very good as a standalone, the references to previous animes are there but they are not completely relevant to the story; mostly small details that longtime fans would recognize and make them love this anime even more.
Watch this anime, you won't regret it.LiyuuSix
100/100The pinnacle of the love triangleContinue on AniListThe moment when I hear "love triangle" I can only think about two things : either it's going to be garbage or a piece of art. Romance between multiple characters is often hard to represent, and in an action mecha? Oh my God this is interesting. Macross Frontier was something different from any other Mecha I've ever watched, if not from any other anime I've ever watched, because it's not just about love and robots. There is a true universe behind it and the execution of it is truly beautiful, maybe I can describe it as the perfect triangle : everything from the start leads to a smooth ending straight to the point.
#[The Love Triangle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw1Dhg69i8w) The story starts after Macross Dynamite 7, an OVA of Macross 7 as a sequel, and tells us the story of Saotome Alto, a young guy with no dreams and Ranka Lee, a little girl who’s affected by amnesia; they meet randomly as they were going to the same event : the Sheryl Nome’s live. Who’s Sheryl Nome? A rising singer who’s famous all around the galaxy and she’s indeed the third main protagonist of this anime. It’s a pretty interesting plot so far : one guy with no dream, a girl who’s living her dream and an another girl who cannot have a dream for the moment; but is the dream real or just a “real dream”? I’ll let you find out because I don’t want to spoil anything. Going back to the story, in this anime humanity now is all around the universe as they are looking for a new home and they are all divided in various fleets and our main protagonist of today is the colony of the Battle Frontier which is comprised of six ships: two stealth medium space carriers (which function as the arms in attack mode), one Combat Command Carrier (“central block”), two medium assault battleships (functioning as the leg “engine blocks””) and one heavy bombardment warship (“Gunship”). When separated, each ship is fold capable, combat capable and otherwise possesses all capabilities of a battleship. This colony is actually trying to escape and avoid an alien form of existence called “Vajra”, a weird type of alien which is attacking every ship causing deaths and destruction, and yeah they gave me nightmares no joking. Vajras have a quite interesting and unique look since it's not your average alien but a "thing" similar to insects more or less and if the goal was to be scary, yes it was a success. As the danger shows up the military do it too and the “Skull Team” shows what it’s capable of. Alto is amazed by them and by their jets, the VF-25, and how they fight and so his very first desire is born : I want to fly The first attack from the Vajras is during Sheryl’s live and there was Ranka there and by watching her and listening to her beautiful songs her very first dream is here : I want to sing Two dreams are born but one is in danger, Sheryl’s dream is in danger now thanks to the enemy. The story keeps a pacing which is almost perfect : there are very few boring or cringey moments and few few plot holes, the suspense is always at the peak and the cliffhangers at the end of important episodes are crazy (especially the penultimate one); I cannot forget about the ending of the show because it's actually my all time favourite ending ever, completely full of action and surprises.
#[The Music is the power of the show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raos5cz4Fgc&t=48s) Ah the music, something I'm very careful to because it's one of the things I care the most about an anime and OH MY OH MY WHAT DO WE HAVE HERE. Macross is kinda known for producing monsters of the music industry, in Delta we literally have JUNNA, but here in frontier we have May'n and Megumi Nakajima; can these two sound well together despite the fact Megumi has a light and sunny voice while May'n has a fucking insane voice full of any vocal range? Y E S. _Seikan Hikou from Megumi Nakajima_ _Diamond Crevasse by May’n_ Their voices are absolutely outstanding in this show and even better when they are together, Macross Frontier is truly one of those few anime where you can see the artist reaching the absolute peak. Sayonara no Tsubasa from the second movie of the anime
#[The animations are outstanding for the time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT7TgvuIe50) Macross Frontier is from 2008 and the CGI from this date is used beyond the beautiful. Smooth movements, not too many poor animations and drawings, the ambient often looks awesome and yes it's incredibly nice to look at. Also the character design of every character is really sweet.
#[Just watch it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRiaIyiAGRo) As it's said, just watch it because it's a truly unique experience and hardly it will disappoint you. Macross Frontier was a once in a lifetime experience, everything is masterfully executed and easily the best executed anime I've ever watched. 100/100Macross Frontier is the Best Mecha AnimeContinue on AniListI often bounce around what I consider my favorite anime. I go through a lot and get attached to a lot of very different things so picking a favorite is tricky. If I were to Narrow it down to a general selection of what COULD be number 1, two anime most often come to mind:
Yu Yu Hakusho, and Macross Frontier.
Macross Frontier is possibly the best mech show I've ever seen. There hasn't been another mech show that has been such a perfect blend of everything I want out of a show fullstop. The story is great without ever dragging its feet, comedy is frequent and charming even if its hardly the funniest show I've ever seen, and the action and visuals are consistently spectacular, with the setting of the titular Macross Frontier being rendered with some gorgeous backgrounds, great character designs and tons of fun and memorable character animations, and the CG used for the lconic Valkyries being some of the best seen at the time that still holds up very well to this day.
And the MUSIC God damn the MUSIC. This is a Yoko Kanno composed soundtrack and her work is as good as always, both in the fantastic orchestral music and the larger-than-life pop songs sung by our leading ladies.
It's all here and it's all close to perfection.
Where all that is great on its own, what is truly perfect is the cast. The side cast is full of really entertaining Characters like Alto's lady's man of a Friend Michael, Ace Pilot and Music enthusiast Oz, the adorable and feisty Meltradi fighter pilot Klan Klan and a hood handful of others make spending time in the world of the Frontier colony a consistent show.
And TRULY sells the show, ascending it from a merely good show to an all time favorite, is out three leads:
Alto Saotome, Ranka Lee, and my GODDESS,
SHERYL NOME.
These three are possibly my favorite trio in anime. Alto is cool and aloof while feeling human and likeable, Rankja is the embodiment of sweetness and joy, and Sheryl nome is a bottle of spirit and charisma who won me over to this show by her sheer force of likeability. Every moment she is on screen she is girlbossing her way through annd dragging everyone along with her. And in the best way possible too while she is, for the most part, always the one controlling the room her Tsundere-esque dynamic with Alto means she is always kept in check and as the show goes her vulnerable side comes out and the goddess is shown to be as human as the rest of us with some of the show's best and saddest scenes.
The love triangle these three become entangled in is easily the best ive seen in anything and watching the three bounce off of each other in the downtime between awesome mech faction is one of the great joys this shown has to offer. The cumulation of the plot alongside their love triangle in the final episode is one of then most satisfying climax's in all of anime (even if the love triangle itself is ultimately concluded in an endearing but nonetheless cop out manner lmao)
