55/100They had us on the first half... Not gonna lie.Continue on AniListContains a few major spoilers, but most people have read the manga, and anything important was already spoiled 3 years ago.
My review for this show was supposed to be in the manga section, but since the movie was released, I think it should be better here.
Since the creation of the harem theme in a romantic comedy, the shipping war was born. Many animes led to a good ending, but for the worst part, you don't know why the heck that happened. The recent harem romance film was Saekano Fine which I watched from a Japanese theatre. It was great actually since I knew the reason why the MC ended up with her.
And now this...
It's like I'm living in a deja-vu, another great manga/anime with a polarized or controversial ending. It's like eating a meal, but for some reason, you ended up tasting bitterness after that last bite. I remember that time when I read the manga a few months back and honestly, I hope this film would surpass that manga. But all hopes seemed lost. Don't get me wrong, the first season was good, the second season was great, but the film/conclusion was meh or so-called, disappointing. Before you read this review, let me give you a warning that I didn't simp anything in particular, and had a neutral side.
All I can is, WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK!
So the film started after the events of the second season. Well, I'll not state the contents of the film but damn... I don't know how the heck they condensed the remaining chapters of the manga into a 2-hour long movie. Many important scenes were cut from the manga, and the pacing of the movie was like a solid recap of 3 episodes from a certain anime. I know that in the second season, they cut also many scenes but this film adaptation was different. It was a rapid-fire recap format. From a romcom harem story, you would've expected all of the girls to be happy in the end, but in reality, that was a total disaster. The beginning of the story was great. The hints, the dynamics and developments of the characters, and the chemistry between the girls and Futarou, but suddenly, Negi buried the work of the final remaining chapters. He didn't conclude it is a good way and of course, the hate was reasonable because it felt rushed, pointless, and incomplete. All characters were developed well and had a great build-up for that ending. But suddenly, this girl stole the center stage of the story. She kept and chained herself to her memories and "sacrificed" herself for the greater good of her sisters. And she made herself to be the supporting role in the series. She eclipsed the whole story without any proper explanation and ended up being that girl who had a happy ending. That's the problem, Negi didn't put any solid stand on why that girl had to be that girl, who didn't have any development. And Futarou, who didn't show any emotion throughout the series, kneeled in front of that girl and said, "Will you marry me?". Well, that sucked. I didn't have any problems with why that girl won, but Negi should add some closure to their relationship. The ending was like, "you didn't see that coming, didn't you?!" when in reality, it was unexplainable. It seemed Negi was forced to end his story and just wrapped up all the loose ends, but it doesn't feel satisfying. This show/movie unfortunately has never managed to do that, a lot of harem series actually manage to break free from their shackles and start developing the relationship between the main character and the true heroine more at some point in the story. It keeps teasing into all directions until the very end and then throws in a spontaneous conclusion of who the true heroine is. The relationship development is basically just skimmed over and then we are also skipping straight to marriage.
At the very end of the series when Fuutarou is describing why each of the sisters is significant to him and relevant, he jokingly just brushes over the bride at the end and says “Welp, just be yourself and that’s that” and proceeded. Jokes are half-meant and it pretty hurts for other girls to hear that. It feels like he chose the winner based on who fans would predict the least and then didn’t have an agenda to go from there. I would have been happy with her winning if it was actually developed more, but it just feels more like a mercy win than what would’ve resulted.
I didn't expect to have an anime original ending for this film but at least, they should execute it well.
I like the characters, especially the other quints who had great development and resolve that led to nothing. But while the others like Itsuki, who didn't get any development until it got shoved right at the end, where it felt nonsense. That biological dad of theirs, who had no impact on the story, became a plot tool. Welp, it ended with melodrama soap opera garbage. It was nowhere to be seen in the first place.
The other bruh moment was the appearance of Futarou's grade school friend, where incredibly fast to the point that they felt completely disconnected from the overall arching plot. She came, and it was like 2 minutes where nothing happened, she left and never to be seen again. She also stated that she the girl who Futarou met from Kyoto. How the heck did she know that she's referring to Yotsuba, while she didn't meet her in the first place? This is some bullshit writing. What the hell.
The art was nice. It's the same in the second season and they maintained the quality at some point.
The sound was great. It's a little bit better than the second season but I like the music from the second season. They captured the moments from the manga. The credits scene was a big thumbs up, and the music they used there was a memorable one.Overall, I still enjoyed the series, but I had major problems with the film. It could be better if they produce a third season instead of a movie. There's a saying that it's not about the destination, but it's the journey. If you agree with that, you could say the whole story is great. Sadly, it didn't maintain that consistent and promising quality. The production quality maintained well, but the last stretch felt like Negi wanted to troll us. The romance at the end was cheesy and troupes were handled pretty well. I guess if this story is relatively well done, it is still a harem story at the end. I enjoyed Negi's ride. It's like riding into a van but the tire got flat and accidentally crashed into a crowd. It's not that bad, but the ending was a disappointment. As a matter of fact, it could be one of the potential best harem romcom animes, that it could overtake my favs. As a rom-com fan, my disappointment was immeasurable, and my day was ruined.
For some reason, I want my money back.

96/100The perfect ending to my most adored anime seriesContinue on AniListIt really has been a while since I felt this much reminiscent over a franchise where one could imagine and illustrate the perfect ending for a series, especially given the fact that is on a romance genre series, it almost gave of the same vibe and feel as the Saekano movie in terms of the way it ended. But I would have to say that 5-toubun no Hanayome Movie has the edge over the other franchise I have mentioned, at least for me.
To give a brief overview on this franchise as a whole, the manga started its serialization on the Weekly-Shounen Magazine back in 2017 with the author behind its beautiful crafted story and character design, Negi Haruba.
With the rise of popularity towards the manga series as a whole, it received an anime adaption in 2019. Truth to be told, the first season of the art style of the anime wasn't as consistent as the upcoming adaption of it, but still it has some great moment when it matter the most.
The first season of the anime ended as any generic romance show one could imagine, it was not super extraordinary or a bad series to be watch, it is something you would watch day and day on any luxury time you had, or so that's what I thought initially. Despite there's some flaws on the anime first season, it remained a very pure romance story and enjoyable to watch for me.
Coming into the sequel, the second season definitely offered more than what we could have imagine it to be. Just when I thought a "harem" show couldn't take it onto the next level, it truly proved me wrong, and I'm really glad that it did that.
Never have I thought a show where it consist of all girls that gets to shine most of the time, each and every individual character in that series gets to tell their own story as well the love affection towards the same person. In most case, we would just thought it is another generic harem troupe, but that's really not the case on this franchise, one thing I really appreciate about is amazing how Negi-sensei is able to craft a story where it doesn't really felt like a harem shenanigans for once in the entire series.
The good-old classic harem troupe on most harem anime is where most girls would throw away their dignity and just act all lovely-dovely towards the mc, kinda like the immature act over how thing played out, yeah is mesmerizing to see girls has love affection towards the mc of the show to a certain degree where one could say it as the "anime-poi style", but sometimes is not all fun and games really when your taking into serious consideration on the way you look things.
And this is exactly what I felt the entire time when I'm watching the second season of the anime. Every single girls are there to support their own feelings for one and another, despite having to fight over the mc they all have love affection towards to, not once where I felt that the harem troupe is there to play things out, is just full of moment that was being romanticize in the most cohesive way where I could never imagine on a harem show to be. The mix of drama is also a very welcome touch to the series, I really like the way it was really portray as what a true romance series is suppose to look like when all girls are dead-serious on winning over the person they love the most.
Whether is jealousy, envious, joyful, sense of relieve, each and every girl is there to play things out with their own way of setting their own stage that one would dream of standing on side by side with the mc.Gotoubun no Hanayome ∬ has truly solidified as what a harem genre series has to offer if is done on the most enticeable way we could ever ask for, I would say it has set a bar on what a true romance series is suppose to be.
Before I mentioned anything about the movie, I must say that as a manga reader myself, I have zero expectation of hope as well as how this film could ever peak as what season 2 of the anime has to offered, because I myself knew everything that could possibly happen beforehand
The final arc of the manga really kinda left me disappointed with the way it was progressed, so many potential of being solidified as the best harem series has to offer in this day of age, fall short apart with the way things ended. I really hate to say this myself, but the final arc of the series was really lackluster, it felt rushed and things feel like it wasn't going anywhere at all. Although the last few chapters of the series did reelevate on its flaw, it could never recover how a perfect series it was meant to be for me.
Before I start watching the movie, my initial thought would be: "ah screw it, ain't gonna bother much about the final arc, who cares about it anymore? Let's gladly enjoy this movie as the last moment where I could finally conclude this franchise as a whole that means a lot to me over the past years".
And man, man oh man, what a great movie they had to offered. I never would have thought that they could revive the manga only flaws, the pacing of the way things is being progressed. This could be me only, but I really felt that the anime film has done an amazing job on executing those moment than what I felt more on the manga itself. They really did a phenomenal job on the film, it was so beautifully made, the characters that was being illustrated into bringing it alive in the last few chapters of the manga was something I really felt heart-warming to it. When all hope felt in vain, they really manage to bounced back and make it into the most perfect ending to the franchise they could ever done.
Although the first half of movie is what I expected it to be just like how it was in the manga with the sudden drastic pace of the story being progressed on the final arc, the second half of the movie is what revived those few moments where I truly felt more impacted than I was reading the manga itself. This movie has reminded me again why I truly adored this series since the beginning of the journey with all the characters played out their part at, the sense of relieve and enjoyment is all I have felt on the entirety of the film.
As the ending credit rolling through, with the ending song being played, I really did shed some manly tears. It truly surpass what I could have imagine it to be. Even on the end credit, the author did gave tribute towards the film by redrawing some of the most amazing moment in the series. The way it was ended, one could say it ended in the most Gotoubun no Hanayome way where one would imagine it to be.
What a masterpiece this series has given to me, a remarkable ending to the note, as one of my favorite franchise has beautifully closed its chapter. What a ride it has been.
May we bless to have such a beautiful series we got to experience upon our lives.
Peace out- -

92/100Unironically the most fun I had watching a movie in theaters.Continue on AniListThis review took me over a month to get some points out.
First watched this movie over a month ago in the cinema and blew me away that I binged the first two seasons again afterward. But now after taking some time to process it and 2 re-watches. This is my review:
MUSIC
Let's start off with the good stuff, the soundtrack is just absolutely phenomenal upping the already amazing music for Season 2, with more emotional beats. The ending music too (Arigato No Hana), I listened to it on repeat for over a month now and it never gets old. Just one of the best tracks for a romcom IMO.
VOICE ACTING
What can I say 5toubun has one of the perfect cast lineups for a romcom, even better here. I swear sometimes I kinda wanna tear up a Lil bit. (Also c'mon Kiryu is here)ANIMATION
While it's good enough and one of the main reasons I prefer Studio Bibury for the animation and art style, especially with the backgrounds and environments, the movie really doesn't look movie quality that much. But the animation was phenomenal for the final 30 minutes though.PACING AND ADAPTATION
It's.... meh? The original manga was already criticized for being rushed in its final arc and condensing that to 2 hours was just asking for pacing issues like, individual moments only passing in a couple of minutes when in the manga it was longer. Even then it's still pretty decent as it still retains most of the core stuff in the movie. The pool arc was also condensed from 6 chapters to just the opening. Now some spoilery stuff:
It cut out some important parts in some of the flashback sequences with Yotsuba and the other quints like the reason Yotsuba even wore her green ribbon. It was fine but some extra context would have been nice. Another thing is the second half of Yotsuba's flashback too which is IMO important to her character and her reasonings.STORY
As I said in my previous paragraph the original arc was already rushed and because yeah it is. The conclusion was too early and some characters had to have their separate arcs be short and not that good. (referring to Itsuki and Bio-dad subplot) it's fine but the story would have been better adapted as a third season as it would flesh out the characters and story more. The whole festival arc thing leading to a confession is a tad bit cliche but it's good enough.Honestly one of the things I didn't like is that it just.. ends right after the confession scene and leads straight into the wedding scene. (if you ignore all the bamboozle that happened inbetween that) Would have liked it if we were shown more into the lives of the other quints and even the chosen bride and Fuutaro.
CHARACTERS
most of the characters have gotten their respective character arcs concluded in a beautiful and fulfilling way for some, but not so much for a few.ENDING
perfect conclusion no matter how rushed the build-up to it was.
