80/100More interesting direction and cast than season 2Continue on AniListAlthough the hype around the series has died down due to the very long wait between seasons, there were definitely a few longtime fans who were excitedly following the news that Psycho-Pass was finally getting another season. As one such fan I was quite pleased that one of my favorite series was getting another expansion, even though I was worried it might be a letdown like season 2 was. However, a few things set this season apart from the prior season which led me to increase my rating for the show this specific season, although not to the heights of the first and greatest season, I will expand on these things in this review.
The first thing I would like to mention happens to be the characterization between the 2 new main characters. It becomes fairly obvious within the first episode and even before it if the viewer watched the sinners of the system movies for Psycho-Pass, which I highly recommend one does before they watch this season, that there would be a fairly large time skip involved. One thing I did not expect however was that Akane Tsunemori would be entirely replaced as the main character by 2 new inspectors, Shindou and Ignatov. At first, I was apprehensive about getting a new set of lead characters especially since the movies hyped Kougami returning to the cast, however the 2 new characters grew on me over time. They both had great chemistry on screen, good backstories on why they joined the bureau, and their decision to partner up despite the Sybil System recommending otherwise was definitely a nice touch. There were some things I did not like such as Shindou having what appears to be borderline magical powers in recreating people’s actions and decision making and having superhuman reflexes that greatly surpass any human shown in the series thus far. However even though flaws like this existed I managed to get past my initial apprehension, and it was definitely worth it, if you are looking for strong leads with great chemistry taking over our favorite sci fi cop drama anime then you will definitely be pleased with the 2 new inspectors.
Something else the show excelled at was amazing fight choreography, all the fight scenes were incredibly fluid and the hand to hand fight choreography is definitely some of the best I have seen out of 100s of action anime. At times the fight choreography does get ridiculous, for example the characters try fighting an actual combat robot hand to hand even though their dominators should have a lethal decomposer mode and the show also has scenes where characters choose to fight hand to hand over using the paralyzer mode. Despite this the fight scenes were so good it makes it possible to not question the decision making of the characters and to overlook this bad writing during those scenes.
In regard to the sound track and music of the series, the openings of Psycho-Pass have always delivered, and this season is no exception. The OP consisted of a great song, with excellent foreshadowing visuals that that I am sure any fan pf the original Psycho-Pass would be satisfied by. Some other noteworthy aspects were careful reuse of the old soundtrack specifically when Kougami finally showed up in the show really had a strong impact. The sound is definitely a high 8 and lives up to the original series entirely.
One other thing that improved was how the side characters and antagonists were dealt with, most of the notable side characters got a decent amount of screen time, some new characters were fleshed out fairly thoroughly with the help of the sinners of the system movies and most of them got their time in the spotlight. Although the characters in the show do lack the depth of the characters in the first season, especially since there was no strong antagonist like the first season, the new antagonists and cases were still fairly easy to watch and made for a strong cop show.
As far as the story is concerned the lack of a truly strong antagonist really getting the viewer to question the system was definitely something that this show lacked, although the current organization opposing Sybil is interesting, there aren’t any particular noteworthy characters representing them. Season 1 was great because the audience was rooting for the antagonist at times and really growing to despise the system yet at the same time at the very end of the show understanding why Akane chose to preserve the system and relating it to the necessary security state many people in real life live in. This season did have moments throughout every episode where characters questioned why the system worked the way it did and if it was fair, but overall the entire show was focused on suppressing the enemies of the system and not really taking a serious look at flaws of the system itself like the predecessor seasons did. Most of the antagonists were clearly bad people who lacked any good reasons on why they are causing problems, there wasn’t any focus on the system oppressing them, in fact most of them were high up in the system. Near the end of the season there were antagonists who were acting for the greater good to some extent but the means they took were not only to extreme, they were straight up bad ideas that wouldn’t have been effective, the antagonist in the first season had considerably better ideas. The story overall is still good and definitely flowed better than most of season 2 however it still pales in comparison to season 1, right now the series is a good sci fi action show, but it is no longer a philosophical thought provoking series filled with flawed characters and ideas of justice like the original.
Production IG has outdone themselves with the art and animation of the series, the backgrounds of the city were spectacular to look at and really built up the sci fi atmosphere. All the detailed touches to the streets, buildings, waterfront, food stalls, hotel lobbies, and everything else in the background really immerses the viewer in this futuristic world that is both an exciting wonderland and at the same time a terrifying view on a society plagued by an all encompassing and dominating police state. As mentioned earlier the fight choreography and animation were great and despite the longer episodes on a weekly release schedule the animation quality remained strong throughout. Fans of the series can look forward to good visuals, good fights, fluid animation, and a variety of interesting looking characters.
Overall these improvements do vastly improve the show for the viewer in comparison to season 2, however it stills pales in comparison to season 1. If you are a big fan of this series then it is a must watch, but if you are not then it is essentially a regular solid sci fi action show, so if that isn’t really what you want to watch then you may not be into this. I would give this show a score of 8/10 as it was something that is quite enjoyable to watch, and it did not fail at delivering any important technical quality.

80/100An exemplary work on how to integrate characters from different seasons in one show and its better than its predecessorContinue on AniListDuring the last two weeks I rewatched the third season of it, and completed it with the anime movie "PSYCHO-PASS 3: FIRST INSPECTOR", which I'll integrate in my assessment and rating of the overall season and this review, regarding the fact that it basically represents the final episodes of it. I first saw season three around two and a half years ago and before my recent rewatch I remembered that I was unsatisfied with it and my overall critical view on different aspects. May it depended on changed and blurred memories, or was it through the movie First Inspector, that rounded and completed the open-end of the season, in either case I finished this particular season three, with a much more positive feeling and an impression of it as a considerable improvement on season two. How I come to this conclusion and to describe what are in my opinion the elements I consider the weak points as well as the strengths of the show, are aspects I'll tackle in this review. One of those strengths, is something I want to mention before, because it will appear several times in the review, and this is my classification of season three as an excellent done sequel. I will elaborate this point especially under the category "characters". ----- #Synopsis A few years after the events in season two, a duo of two good old friends, in the person of Arata Shindou and Kei Mikhail Ignatov, joins the the Division 01 of the CID of the Public Safety Bureau as inspectors. During their first case and operation, they see themself confronted what seems at the surface like an ordinary accident, but soon they discover that there is more behind of it. In a new environment, they have to adapt and learn how to shoulder responsibility. Luckily, the childhood friends can rely on the other and they can share many burdens, but the extend of the criminal actions will put even their friendship to the test. #Plot Already with the plot, the third season of Psycho-Pass orientates itself on various main elements of the franchise, that are also unmistakable pillars of the plot in season one. Again a weakness of the Sybil System is exploited by the inviduals who serve as the antagonists of season three. In this case it is Byfrost, a system itself that once was used as a Bug- and Erroridentification program for the Sybil System in its early days. In this system, that has a hierarchic structure, the congressmen at the top, gamble and play about events in the society, that they themself initally orchestrated through a gap in the system, and make prognosis about the developments of the events. Similar to season one, Division 01 of the CID must solve individual crime cases that are connected together with a shared origin. One aspect that bothered me concerning the plot was, that in my opinion the third case was too convoluted, there were too many twists and turns and with the large count of characters and the additional acting characters in the background, it was difficult to keep the track and overview of the story. The pacing of the events was enormously stretched, which extracted the dramatic and tension of the anime at this point. What I prefered in contrary was the wide range of topics that where brought up through the individual cases from a financial scandal and corruption, over elections in the society of sybil to the debate about a district for immigrants. Probably the best aspect about the plot in season three was the final, that is shown in Psycho Pass 3 FIRST INSPECTOR. The plot is is brought to a logical and satisfying ending, moreover it offered an outlook into the future of Psycho-Pass and introduced aspects that will probably play a role in further series. It completed storylines of individual characters and, in return, represented as well new beginnings, in the form of the resumption of storylines of other characters. #Worldbuilding The Worldbuilding was mostly not extended in season three of Psycho-Pass. Though there was one point that was occasionally thematized in this season, which were the Slums and abandoned districts as the central location in the story. The anime took its time to explain their existence, the daily-life of its habitants and its functions in a japan that is ruled by sybil. It's roles as a sealed off and segregated room of social exclusion. To seperate the "good" and "bad" persons in the society and by that using those abandoned districts as anarchistic prisons, to shield of their side of it. #Characters Likewise to other Psycho-Pass productions, it were the characters that stood out for me particularly and they represent the aspect I prefered the most about this season. I always characterized it as a particular strength of Psycho-Pass to have a comprehensive examination of the characters, by giving them enough screen time, space to develop and appear, as well as to grant them extensive interactions between the each other and through that create unique dynamics and a good group atmosphere. Especially thanks to the deep-going evaluation fo the characters, one can identify, sympathize and relate to the different characters. In season three we have an almost entirely new and changed constellation in division 01 of the CID. _Kei Mikhail Ignatov und Arata Shindou_ Starting with the main characters Arata Shindou and Kei Mikhail Ignatov. Both have possibly from the start the best chemistry of all Psycho Pass duos of protagonists. They are well balanced and complement each other good in terms of their characteristics and other points. They embody contrary traits on different fields. Arata is the cheerful, carefree and philanthropic part from both of them, while Ignatov is more reserved and distanced in his behaviour. What they share is their distinct sense of justice and the believe of humans as the last instance to decide what they judge as right or wrong and to take responsibility for that decision. In terms of Arata Shindou there were smaller issues that bothered me a bit, first are his too obvious and strong similarities and shared characteristics with Akane Tsunemori. His bonding with enforcers, having a critical view on sybil and an individual view on justice in this society as well as having a Criminally Asymptomatic Constitution. That is simply too much to speak of a simple imitation. Furthemore his ability of mental tracing in addition with an extraordinary physically condition, were something I felt as overexaggerating. _Tenma Todoroki_ The enforcer is on the outside a slightly different version of Tomomi Masaoka. What differs the two is their personal background and their characteristics. Todoroki is the son of a well-endowed and influential family and suffers from the fate of abandonment after the didn't turn out as they expected him to be. He also has a strong sense for justice, which he wouldn't admit publically and his inner passion for being a cop isn't as strong as the one Masaoka had. Apart from that he has a laid back character and the habit to come to the wrong conclusion because he instantly shouts the first thing that comes to his mind. _Kazumich Irie and Mao Kisaragi_ The character of the enforcer Kazumichi Irie was probably my favorite addition in the series. Not only his character is extraordinary funny, but his personal packground it what mainly makes him interesting. With his socialisation and origin, as someone who who grew up in the slums, far away from the stabil society of Sybil he brings up an interesting perspective to the show and world of Psycho-Pass. Through his experiences and road of life, he portrays and offers a different view on Sybil and the shadow sides of the system. Unfortunately Mao Kisaragi, was from the cast of characters the one that remained bland and superficial for most of the time. Near the end we discover more about her and her backstory but that wasn't enough, that she could leave a lasting impression on me. __Now I'll get to the previous mentioned point why I regard it as a brilliant sequel.__ This has to do with the treatment of old, beloved and seasoned characters and their implemention in the story. In comparison to new characters, there are around as equally characters in the story from seasons before, who already went through experiences and developments, and are treasured and respected by the fans. What now sets a good sequel apart from a bad or only mediocre sequel, is to integrate them in the story, without resulting in the extreme of either overshadowing the new characters by the old ones or diminishing the old ones by the new. In my view this season of Psycho-Pass managed this balance perfectly, which is why I hold it in such high regards. The new introduced characters have their moments as well as the old ones. The former logically have more screentime, to have them porperly introduced to the viewer and to let them take the steps to also become fully established characters of the franchise. But this is done not by making them a simply just better versions of the old ones, but by giving them challenges to overcome, equip them with weaknesses and strengths to form a believable character. Though the members of the old crew have less screentime, they nevertheless keep their old characteristics and strengths that resulted from many experiences throughtout the seasons. To see the old team interact with the new one always made my Psycho-Pass heart jump higher and I loved to see the dynamics and situations between the Suppressing Action Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and division 01 of the CID. #Animation The animation was good and appropriate for the year of 2019 when it was released. Its remarkable how fast one grown used to this level of animation, especially when I recently took a look in the episodes of the first season and I was surprised how far the animation quality improved since them. A special mention deserve the many hand to hand combat scenes and fight choreographies in the anime. Psycho-Pass is surely unmatched in this category and they were always a pleasure to watch. #Music The music was typically for the anime, I loved the addition of soundtracks of the first season, as soon as characters from previous seasons had an appearance. Another aspect that I also appreciate is how for each season of Psycho-Pass, they modify and more or less change the main theme of season one, and use it as its main soundtrack for the current one.

#Summary A third season of Psycho-Pass that heavily orientates itself on elements that carry the franchise and that made it popular in the first place, and therefore is in my view a far more interesting season than the second one. Depending on individual taste, the similarities to aspects from the first season can be viewed as too strong. Though to its defend, it also tries to bring in new aspects, topics and characters to the series and world. In particularly in questions of characters and how to bring new and old characters into line in a sequel, this series is an ideal example.

50/100This anime is a shining example of ruining what was once a beloved original animeContinue on AniListIronically, the best way to review this anime is if this is your first experience viewing Psycho-Pass media, if this is the first anime you saw in this franchise, a) you are way off your mark, and b) watch the first season, please.
One of the original PP's biggest appeals was that there were two sides to the justice system. The SIBYL system was, in its eyes, trying to keep the general populace safe and stable but also sacrificing their free will and brutally and efficiently punishing others who have a slight cloud to their hue. On the other hand, you have Shogo, who encourages people to discover their free will and reject the system. This also leads to people becoming psychopaths who hunt, kill, brutalise and even r*** others. Fans will know what one scene I am referring to
PP2 removes this by summing down to a poor man's version of Shogo destroying the Karen of the SIBYL system, to the point that he even dies gracefully and without punishment for his sins.
PP3 does this slightly better, I guess. Maybe the SIBYL system has developed far beyond its programming, allowing it to accept new immigrants and even enable recent presidents to be elected to run the country. The problem is that not only is this suddenly dumped onto our laps (and once again, it is not even foreshadowed in the three movies previously), but it also destroys one of the main appeals for the SIBYL system, being that it is supposed to be in control of the actual system (also remember a line in PP1 that says the politicians were just puppets and theoretical shows?).
I will say that the second half of the anime slightly saved the series for me; it's interesting to see what religions are present in this world of PP, although the imposter among them is very obvious. The second half also brings exciting revelations to the new cast and a not-bad hook to the ending of the anime, leading to the sequel movie.
You know that the Bifrost group are so uninteresting that they still don't have images posted to them on the character tvtropes even two years later, despite them being responsible for most of the events happening in said anime. Hell, not EVEN THE TWO NEW MAIN CHARACTERS THAT HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED TO REPLACE THE AKANE AND KOUGAMI DUO
The two main characters in this show are Kei and Arato; Kei is meh, a typical edgy and immigrant problem that I don't care about but is ok. My main concern is with Arato here; he is just some bullshit power protag with a suddenly introduced power that is not even slightly foreshadowed in the previously established lore, which allows him to conveniently get new information and move on to the next part. It might be visually attractive, but don't let this fool you. It is just made there to make Arato "unique" and to move the plot along because the writers behind this series are such hacks and don't know how to make investigation scenes properly. His reveal of being a "Criminally Asymptomatic" individual who wants to help others is interesting, but it's not enough to carry him as a character imo.
If you view this anime by itself, it can become a somewhat interesting view on child trafficking, scam houses, political campaigning, idol business, religion and how the Congressman controls all the business avenues and cities here. However, with consideration of the previous seasons, this anime is essentially a spit to the face of the watchers who viewed the original anime at its peak and watched it devolve with Tom Shikata ruining what was once Gen Urobuchi's work, to the point the latter quit the season and passed it off to the former, who was forced to make a bunch of bland new characters because even misusing the old pre-established characters could destroy this anime more then it needs to.
I watched this anime almost a year ago, I might be misremembering some details, but if I got anything wrong with this anime, I don't really care.
