60/100Some of the worst pacing I've seen, but getting better in recent chapters.Continue on AniListBeing a HUGE fan of the slime and spider reincarnation manga/anime, I was immediately drawn to this. I was instantly enraptured with the concept of the main character being a little dragon, as I love monster protagonists. I am very forgiving of the media I consume- which is why I was shocked when I found myself having a somewhat negative opinion about this. I am usually a very biased person, but even my bias towards this specific monster reincarnation genre(?) didn't save it from me writing this, and that should tell you something. I will preface this review with the fact that I have only read the manga.
When I first started reading, I was enjoying the crumbs of worldbuilding given to me, as any manga enjoyer would. I wasn't irked by it since the manga was just getting on its feet storytelling-wise, but after righting itself, it managed to immediately fall back down. The beginning is the best part, but it steadily gets worse pacing-wise. The fights are constant, and there was never that much time to breathe in fully what was happening, as I only recall 5 times outside of the introduction where there was actual peace and worldbuilding, though brief. Due to the lack of said times of peace, I found it extremely hard to connect to any characters at all. The only one I like is Black Lizard, and that's just because her design is so darn cute along with her! But she's an animal! I shouldn't like something comparable to a highly intelligent dog more than the only other character that has any personality/development other than the main character. The only true focus of the story is how fast our dragon evolves and levels up, which is also rushed.
Anyways, the constant fighting really ruins tension, as eventually you are just so worn out from the fights that you just want to skip to the part where the main character wins. Sadly most worldbuilding is done in these fights, such as the monkey fight and the fight with the slime dude. Which on that note- this slime literally appeals to everything I like in a character, and somehow I still find myself not attached. I wish they did something more with him personally, as I would have really enjoyed him being a consistent rival- he is the foil to the main character, after all. I suppose the new black mirror of the main character is nice, but I feel like these guys are getting pulled out a bit too early in the series- our little dragon friend has no character development- maybe they should have saved that for later? There isn't anything hidden about him that needs to be highlighted at the moment, and all these dudes are used as is EXP or status fodder.
If you like a Naive main character that is a bit too friendly, this is the story for you. I personally love strong but kind characters, so I don't mind the main character too much- though I have seen many dislike him due to his perceived unintelligence and overall strange decision making- but that's something you have to determine for yourself! If you like constant action, this is also for you! I would compare this to the Demon Slayer manga in terms of fights.
I believe that this was done by a very passionate person, and they got too excited trying to put their idea in manga form. This story has/had so much potential, and I am extremely giddy about the newer chapters taking it a bit slower to establish the world. It looks promising, and hopefully in the next 5 years or so this will be on the next arc, haha. It does take forever to update according to others, but I personally don't mind.
I'm curious about where this is going! It didn't start off too good, but the newer chapters look interesting and the pacing is a lot better. And of course, the most important part... THE MONSTER DESIGNS ARE AWESOME! I love every monster that shows up, the one thing this manga consistently does right is showing the wildlife in their natural habitat, which I love. A lot of the monsters used I have never seen before, which I think gives it more charm! I'm giving it a 60, I feel too bad to rank it lower when it has so much potential qwq. I encourage reading this to see how you feel about it- it's pretty mediocre but perhaps you can find some joy in it like I did. Despite my mostly scathing words, I hope that the manga gets better =]
