85/100A somewhat dark classic style of isekai story - this series is enjoyable to read, if not remarkable.Continue on AniListA fun series that handles a fairly simple and common isekai premise, with only relatively slight twists. The overall plot is fairly simple, following the MC as he finds new monsters and enemies to fight and eat, growing stronger along the way, and growing a group around himself. The story does slowly get slightly more mysterious, but not much has come of that aspect as of yet, though it is clearly setting things up for later. The characters are solid if simple, none having significant depth, but still largely fun to watch and read about. They have clear and straightforward dynamics between them, which while not unique or complex are easy to understand and enjoyable. The protagonist in particular is fairly simple, but could be a breath of fresh air for those used to extremely white-bread nice-guy isekai protagonists. He is fairly curt at times but actually grows to care about the people around him, despite being actually decisive when needed and having clear motivations both in wanting to grow stronger and why he wants to grow stronger. He doesn't fall into wimpy MC vibes that many more modern isekai do, as he actually is a driving force in the story of his own will and is trying to accomplish things. The art is unremarkable but decidedly solid, somewhat unique in going a bit more for grittiness at times. During the battle and action scenes, the art occasionally shows weakness, as it doesn't lend itself to overly clear fights or choreography, but it also doesn't try to do those things, instead electing for individually solid shots and results.
One thing that does need to be warned is that the series covers some heavy topics, and shows some dark things at times, so be warned. In particular, it doesn't shy away from showing fairly graphic wounds and deaths, and due to the core premise has lots of consumption of sentient beings. Also, it handles some more directly sensitive content - particularly: that the goblins originally kidnap, trap, and rape females of other species. However, it does handle that topic roughly as well as it was likely going to and doesn't glorify or sexualize it. There also is some generally sexual content, but it's not directly shown "on screen" and is relatively inobtrusive overall.
Overall, this manga is nothing extremely special, but it is a fun series to read that won't leave you bored if you enjoy fantasy series with powerful protagonists that grow in unique ways power-wise. Don't go into this looking for your next favorite story full of deep characters and plots or an expansive and detailed world, but you don't need to completely turn your brain off, as it has enough character/plot depth to keep things reasonable, and enough worldbuilding to keep the story feeling grounded in a setting.
The series should also be recognized for likely being a major player in actually starting some now common tropes in isekai - the story format and concept is noticeably similar to that of the ever-popular Slime isekai, with the MC gaining the abilities of what they eat, starting as a basic trash mob, and growing to lead a group, but it needs to be noted that Re:Monster started in 2012, while Slime started in 2014, making Slime the one who'd have copied here, though the two series are distinct enough in their details that I'd say it's more "derivative" than "copying" in this case. Fans of Slime will likely enjoy this series as well, though the overall tone is a bit darker here.
