85/100Bastard is a good reminder on what makes a great thriller.Continue on AniListUsually in a good thriller, it should be the key focus to make the reader feel compelling to read through, but also intense so you keep on reading. Bastard already achieves that goal with the absolute amazing 1st chapter, which seriously impressed me alot. The suspense in the dialogue and the gritty artstyle complements the dark enviroment the author is trying to make, which i think he succeeded really well. Already from that point, i am personally hooked in, but what made me more interested? Well, to be fair, it is the story. Usually in other great thriller mangas like Monster and Death Note, the main character is usually already likeable and you're drawn in to experience the full journey, but that isn't the same for this one. Jin, the main protagonist, is super cold in the first beginning chapters of the series and acts very much like a depressed teenager when he comes in. He is also very weak and doesn't involve himself in fights due to him knowing he will lose. But i think that is a strong point in the story-telling departments, because it sets up the antagonist of the series, his father - the serial killer which gets in his sons way in his young school life. Combine the both and you have yourself a great story. I loved seeing other viewpoints of the stories and the character interactions were good but what really made me love it was Jins development as a character. He is forced to change due to his fathers tyranical nature in forcing him to do some really messed up sh#! and its developed well enough that i liked Jin as a character at the end of this story, which was very unpredictable aswell. I'd like to go a bitmore into the artstyle of Bastard, which is the usage of colour. The dark, brown colours used really sets up the dark atmosphere Jin is forced to be in, which makes me as a reader more interested, and every damn cliffhanger doesn't quench my curiosity for what is about to unfold in the next chapter. _I already feel like re-reading it again_ Finally, we have the characters. Manny is a character that goes through a redemption arc and even though it really isn't the most well-done, i think he does a fairly good job in succeeding at it and being kind of a side character to Jin which was enjoyable to get to know. Definetly the weakest character in the manwha, but i don't see her as the worst. Though used as a plot tool sometimes, she is the one that forces a change on Jin which makes me like her alot. She also warmed my heart with her backstory which genuinly sad, which i definetly did __NOT__ expect from a thriller manwha. Finally, we have the bad guy. There is much to be said about this cruel and old ass dude but one thing i will have to say is that the author is really great at using this character. You expect him to do one thing but he suprises you in ways you would not expect. He also brings many plot twists into the series, which just makes me appreciate his character alot more. He is definetly no Johan Liebert but damn does he do a good job at making me feel fear. With that out of the way, what is my consensus on the manwha Bastard? It is a great thriller manwha that does things right, and adds twists like character development, a bit of other genres into the horror genre but also does things well like genuinly shocking plot twists. The artstyle is downright 10/10 though the art CAN be lacking sometimes and the characters really arent the most fleshed out. Still, this was genuinly a manwha i would wholeheartedly reccomend, and is an absolute fantastic start if you want to get more into manwha/Webtoons. Thanks for reading my review! This is a bit more in-depth to my usual reviews, as i really took my time with it since i really enjoyed Bastard alot. Feedback would be appreciate on my page, so hit me up once you are done reading. See you on the next review, peace!
~~~~~~
100/100Oyasumi Punpun & Bastard: Two masterpieces that I think you should read.Continue on AniListBastard Bastard is a manga I've recently finished and can gladly say it deserves the second spot on my top 10 manga, right under Oyasumi Punpun. Without getting into too much detail, Bastard is about a boy named Jin Seon who's the son of a murderer, Dongsoo Seon(Which isn't really a spoiler because it's said in the first chapter of the story). He struggles to fit in at school due to his hard life, and as if things aren't bad enough, Jin helps his father kill the victims. When Kyun Yoon, a transfer student, catches the eye of Dongoo Seon, Jin has to decide whether to help his father kill her, or protect her. While all of this is happening, Jin wants to be free from his fathers grasp, but due to certain things he just can't do it. As the story progresses, you're introduced to a lot of characters who all have their own problems in life. For example (spoiler warning), we have Kyun Yoon, who is dealing with the loss of her dead dad, while being forced to pay his debt, and on top of that having to deal with her senile granddad. Dealing with all of this, she has to resort to methods that a high school girl shouldn't resort to. As you see the characters backstory, it's easy to start building up love for them and understand them more. Let's take the MC Jin Seon for example. You could understand why he's the way he is through the little that you were given at the beginning, but as it progresses, you learn new things about him that play a huge factor in him as a character. You see him even going flat out berserk during some chapters due to how messed up his past was. It makes you feel sorry for a person like Jin. He's a boy who had no chance in life as a kid. He was thrown into a rough environment from the start, and it's honestly amazing to watch how he develops as a character. There are even some points where you're rooting for Jin, but know what he's doing is completely out wrong. Now, Bastard isn't as dark as Punpun is, but despite that still manages to do justice. Ihonsetly think you'd have to be cautious when reading the story because there are some scenes where it's darkness really shows. I personally feel like Bastard is a great example of how a Thriller and Mystery story should be. It's story development is so good, that you'd never actually get bored of the series. And the ending just completely makes the story come to a full circle, making bastard a masterpiece. The art style is good, though for a manwha, you wouldn't usually expect the same type of amazing panels like Punpun, Berserk ,or Vagabond, but it's still good. Out of 10, i'd give this manwha a 10/10.
Ending this review Now that I've come to the end, I just wanna say if you've made it all the way to here, you're honestly a legend lmao. For real though, thanks for giving my review a read. 85/100Suspenseful thriller with a great story and character developement.Continue on AniListGreat webtoon that kept me awake last night. Bastard is a great example of what a good thriller means. Compelling story and action that keeps you in suspense.
Characters
I would mainly like to refer to the relationship between Jin Seon and Seon Dongsoo. A father who from an early age literally tortures his son mentally and actually changes his perception of the world, and deprives him of all emotions, such as any empathy, joy or love. Our main character does not even know what the true friends are, which also, whether we like it or not, has a tragic effect on his psyche. It has been fantastically presented how the boy’s father is a crazy psychopath, without any scruples.
In the manhwa, a very apt definition of this man as a demon was used, because there is probably no other name for this madman. Mass murderer of innocent people who will meet his sick tastes, if that’s how you can describe his sick thinking. We have to notice how incredibly clever this character is. He works slowly and thoughtfully, leaving no traces behind. He donates money to charity so that people do not suspect him of the committed murders, he is always kind and helpful to everyone. And that’s what really is the most terrifying thing about this man. Just how good an actor he can be. Perhaps it is because of his so corrupted perception of the world. Because of which he does not care about the suffering of other people, and does not feel any empathy for them. He is only interested in satisfying his own lusts for murder. It is also interesting how he drove many people mad and to the point of losing their senses. The way he drove his wife crazy is very cruel as befits this sick demon. Now let us turn to his son. He is undergoing a complete metamorphosis. From a person dependent only on his father, not knowing the world, he turns into a rebel, hence the name of the manga “Bastard”. A beautiful love thread of a callous person with a person who is able to understand it and destroy its hard shell without feelings. It is from her that he learns many basic things and it is thanks to her that he wants to fight evil. It is she who even without knowing it gives him the motivation to fight his dad, even though he does not fully understand it, because after all, he does not fully know what love is… By the way, the ending of the manga was exactly what I expected, but I do not understand why the main character went to jail… I thought that as a child who literally suffered from brainwashing by his father, he will not be held responsible for his actions… Maybe it looks different in Korea.
Graphics
The graphics in this manhwa are really nothing unusual, although some of the facial expressions showing the face and anger are drawn phenomenally and make the reader identify with the main character of this manhwa. Overall graphics made reading pleasant, but it wasn’t something that I would call a masterpiece. The smooth transitions that gave this manhwa an impression of dynamics were also a big plus.
Would I like Bastard to get anime adaptations?
Honestly, I wouldn’t. I don’t think the anime can convey these great facial expressions and show the madness of the main character’s father. Sure it could add more drama to some scenes with the music, etc., but still I think it’s not the manhwa that should get an adaptation.
Overall thoughts
As I have been a long-time fan of crime stories and suspenseful thrillers, I enjoyed this manhwa very much. A great plot combined with a pleasant manga graphics means that we can really empathize with the fate of the main character, and every time he feels pain, we also feel it internally. This good thriller in my opinion deserves the rating of 8.5/10 You can find more reviews by me on my site, link in my bio :)
