82/100There was once a witch who was banned from the village she protectedContinue on AniListIn this short manga of Madoka Magica we explore the life and death of a small group of magical girls. Suzune is responsible for the murder on a few girls and when she's confronted Arisa, a fight breaks out. From this point on, the girls meet and fight, trying to find out why Suzune would do those things, who she is and who the other characters are. It should be noted that this work isn't meant to function on its own, it's more an extra story for fans who are still waiting for the fourth Madoka movie or want more content from this franchise in general.
This manga follows the themes of justice, revenge and despair (despair is always a theme in the madokaverse but you know) by exploring each character's wish. We see the past of all the girls, from a bullied girl, from an envious sister, a blind girl, a girl who lost her parents to witches, a girl who was abused by her father and a girl whose mother left. We confront the cycle of magical girls again and get more moments to absolutely hate Kyubey.
The small cast makes it easy to create a clear dynamic between all the characters in that small amount of chapters. we get nice fights with simple magical powers. I did not like the costumes of this magical girl group and the character design wasn't all that great either but nothing horrendous either. The characters themselves were built as good as Madoka Magica characters should be and I did like each girls backstory, they were as tragic and yet simple as I'm used to as a Madoka fan.
One of the things that stood out to me, and that makes it different from Madoka Magica, is that we are thrown into the story right off the bat. There's no long build up about what magical girls are, what they do or who Kyubey is. We do get the informations but only around the second half of the manga. After the first important event, we are confronted with each character to make us understand what they are like, who they were and who they have become up to this point.
The end is probably one of the less expected things parts of the shows as it more or less destroyed Suzunes character to make space for a different girl.
We learn that Matsuri has a sister (Kagari) who can rewrite and delete memories. It turns out that the majority of Suzunes notion of justice, that she has talked about in fair length, was merely a result of Kagaris magic, in a weird deal with Kyubey. The whold thing was a trick to make Suzune an assassin and then reveal it all to her so she would feel a ridiculous amount of guilt. Yeah, that's pretty messed up given that Kagari supposedly made the deal as a childI did enjoy reading this manga and don't think that it should have been any longer (the end wouldn't have stuck as much if we had passed too much time on any of the major characters) than it was. I'm happy to have taken the time to read it and would recommend Madoka fans to at least take a look at it, it's very different from the original show but not in a bad way.
That's it with my review, I hope you enjoyed the manga.
