90/100If you are a fan of seinen manga, you will enjoy this manga.Continue on AniListIf you are a fan of seinen manga, you will enjoy this manga. It is definitely what I would classify as a "hidden gem" (at the time of writing this, it has an average rating of 76% and a mean rating of 79% on here, along with a pretty low number of people that have read it).
It shares themes with and has similar characters to many other big, well-known seinen manga, such as Berserk, Vinland Saga, and Kingdom. This story grips you from the very beginning and honestly may have the best opening chapters of any series I have read, at least in recent memory. After it grabs you at the start, it continues to intrigue throughout. Every time that I expected it to slow down or drop off, something big would happen again. It was full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat while reading and made me want to continually read, chapter after chapter. It has great character development, for multiple characters, and each new character that is introduced brings something interesting to the table. No characters remain stagnant or are useless/kept around for no reason. The art style is also great and everything is in full color, as well. At first, it being entirely in color threw me off a bit because I'm used to reading manga in black and white, but it did not take long to adjust, and it actually adds to the greatness of the story -- the coloring is done extremely well and adds great details.
It is the first part of a three part series, and it is only 38 chapters long, what do you have to lose by trying this out? That's how I went into reading this, and I'm glad I did try it -- I very much look forward to the other two parts in this series and am hopeful that it continues to impress.
To go into more spoilery detail about why I compared this series to Berserk, Vinland Saga, and Kingdom in particular:
- Berserk: The main character reminds me a great deal of Guts. Even physically so, after a certain point.
- Vinland Saga: The main characters father, who is the first main character that you see (the manga would honestly be just as badass if he was the main character...I would love more backstory on him) reminds me of Thors. He may perhaps be an even better character than Thors was...
- Kingdom: This one is the most obvious...the story takes place in China. It takes place before the events in Kingdom take place.
