71/100It is a good story, with some flaws and a bit too sillyContinue on AniListThere will be some spoilers, there's a warning before getting there.
I saw this manga one day at the comic book store, read a few panels and decided to give it a shot, as it was short and seemed cool. Short enough not to be boring, Defense Devii is a pretty good story, giving an interesting twist to the classic demonic world. lt narrates the adventures of Mephisto Bart Kukabara, son of the King of the infernal world, that is somehow too nice to be a demon, and so he is confined to Event Horizon, a piace where he observes Earth and seeks to investigate unresolved deaths, in order to bring back the victims to life. This involves assisting the spirit of the person, looking for clues and solving the case, before a Shinigami takes the victim to their own hell, each one with a different punishment system.
The premise is good, a demonic Lawyer solving mysterious cases to obtain the dark matter and turn into his "cooler version", but the stories are a bit repetitive, and the main character has barely any development, most of the time we only get more information about the characters through flashbacks, but those are not enough to make them grow. So Kukabara is most of the time a dork until someone touches his friends or he's facing a neardeath fight, then he manages to gain the dark matter, turn into a monster (with his super cool pen that turns into a giant sword, points for that), and slay the evil demons, crime solved. That's a good summary of what happens for more than half of the story. As far as the other characters, there's Bichura or Bchuler, a demon that turns into a dragon and is great at complaining all the time, simply because he doesn't like Kucabara's polite attitude, or whatever he decides to do. lt should be a side character, but i feel like he's barely useful and really just yells too much, and he's not even the comedic relief, he's not actually funny, he's just so done with him, and probably hates his chibi version. On the other hand ldamaria, the nun, is an interesting character, since all the fan service (shower scenes aside) is more or less tied to Kukabara's assistant Elimona, which is wearing a different cosplay every time she shows up, and gives him some weird gadgets that are always coming in clutch at the right moment. The nun is the kind of character that is tormented and doesn't know where she belongs, so her struggle between the infernal world and her religious life is well developed, although she sometimes goes berserk for no particular reason. And then my favorite character, Gary Peter Shugaru ( caIled Sugal in some versions) which is a Shinigami obsessed with mathematics and logics, always calculating his shots and unpredictable patters, and his story feels like he actually understands his role and changes completely in order to save the little giri Jupiter. He has a development: his logic way of thinking makes him realize what's happening, and his will to protect the little Jupiter seems like his own way to repent from his past actions. Then there's Y or Samus, which is introduced later in the story and i still don't understand his/her gender, because in my version (italian) she (i think) talks about herself as a male, but is referred as a female by the other characters, maybe she ( or he?) states something about it but i might have forgotten. That's the most interesting part of the character, and i don't even think it's made on purpose. The worst part is the talking car. The Author gives her waaaaay too much attention, again for no reason or to make the situation funny when they are literally going through all the worst hell levels. I don't know, it is good, but there's a huge difference between serious and funny moments, even the characters feel completely different, but the fights are at least hype, you are definitely waiting for him to transform and kick some ass. And honestly, i feel bad because after all this journey, all the cases and the whole idea of rebalancing the underworld SPOILERS AHEAD STOP IF YOU HAVEN'T READ the last volume changes everything, gives some insanely cool panels during the last fights, they almost look like they weren't done by the same person, even the rhythm isn't interrupted by silly comments. And all of a sudden, ANGELS, never mentioned before, not in the slightest, entirely different entities and insanely overpowerered. Care to explain a little more? Literally a few lines, through Elimona, and then a random potion revives every dead character and provides a happy ending without too much troubles to be honest. I don't know, if felt planned but at the same time it's another plain solution, to close a decent but rather avoidable manga. The Author said that he will come back with a more powerful story, i have yet to read it but maybe there are improvements, he seems like a nice guy, at least, as he tells some funny short stories at the end of each volume about his life as a Corean author in Japan.
