84/100A rather bizarre continuationContinue on AniListSpoilers and swearing ahead
I was excited for this one, i didn't enter the world of Jojo completely blind, being recommended to watch/read it for so long, plus the fact that it's such a popular manganime series, and oh god, the memes, there's no way to go in completely virgin, i knew a handful of things, like Kars reaching the ultimate state and being sent to space, but it wasn't enough to ruin this experience.
It is a huge upgrade from Part 1, now don't get me wrong, i loved Part 1, but this is so much better, at the start Jonathan was still my best boi but in the end, Joseph takes the cake. He's a combat genius, funny and honorable, caring even, he really has grown on me.
The characters in this one are great, i loved characters that i didn't care about in the beginning, like Stroheim, and even Wham.
Wham is great, i'm SUCH a fucking sucker for honor driven characters, like a certain doughnut lover from another big manga, and him being the kind of person proud of being killed by someone like Joseph, and keeping his word at all times, characters like him and Bruford from Part 1, they go out like chads and that's what i love about them.
At the end of the manga, when Joseph "died" after sending Ultimate Kars to space, i knew that Joseph survived since i saw him in clips, but i'm not gonna lie to you right now, i totally fucking forgot that he survived, and when he "died" and we got panels from his funeral, i was about to fucking break, shit, even when he appeared and revealed that he was still alive, it still took me a minute to realize that i already knew this, i was like, "WHAT, HOW?! Is he like a guy disguised as hi- oh wait a fucking second"... i'm glad my boi survived, it's amazing when main characters go out with such glory, giving their lives for the CAUSE, like Jonathan, but i was legit gonna be real sad if he didn't make it, and boy am i happy.
It was also really nice to see what happened to the characters at the end, Stroheim dipping, Speedwagon... i mean, my guy's getting a break, finally, Smokey becoming a major, i'm even happy that Suzie Q got to marry Joseph, she's a good girl, beware of thots Jojo.
And one last thing, the world traveling, Mexico, New York, Switzerland, wtf, that's pretty amazing.I'll be watching the Part 3 anime, excited to see where the story goes, even if i know some bits of it.
Hope you enjoyed the read!MasterCrash
70/100While inheriting a lot of the problems, Part 2 succeeds where Part 1 does notContinue on AniListIt was in October of 1987, almost a full year into Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, that Araki decided to do something that a lot of people would probably consider drastic, specially in a weekly manga like this one. He completely changed the setting and the cast of characters of his work and made us travel almost 30 years into the future to meet a whole new generation of Jojo. It's with the introduction of a much more rebellious main character, a one Joseph Joestar, that Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 2 starts, also known as Battle Tendency.
With that said, Battle Tendency feels like a natural sequel to Phantom Blood, which is not something we can say about every single part of this series. The fact that it follows the story of the first one and expands on it, really helps. It makes these two parts feel like an era of Jojo on it's own. It drags the Castlevaniesque feel with it, still following the mask's story and exploring it's origin, and having the vampires and ripple. All things that are about to be discarded after this part.
Now, this review is a bit of a follow up to my review of part one. If you didn't read that, I talked about a lot of problems that Phantom Blood had that stopped me from enjoying it as much as I wanted to. Part two really doesn't improve much on most of these aspects. The art is still very much the same as it was a year prior, and all I said still remains true. The designs are nice, they're unique, they're colorful when given the chance, whenever you see a character from Jojo, you know you're seeing a Jojo character. But it's still ugly in here and the poses are still not only ridiculous but feel unnatural. The dialogues too still remain very "clunky" and unnatural, which I swear to God, feels like a lot of mangaka and comic writers from this era don't know how to have dialogues with people, because isn't certainly just a Jojo problem and it really ruins a lot of the immersion.
So it seems like I'm about to stick another 55/100, pack things and go home, but there's one thing that I said in my Phantom Blood review that is very true here. I said that the other problems could be excused if we had a better character. Since the main character was boring, his dialogues unnatural and his artstyle ugly... there really wasn't much to enjoy. Thankfully, in Battle Tendencies we have Joseph.
Joseph is way more charismatic than any character in the previous part and he alone makes this one be so much more enjoyable. He's fun to follow, but the great thing about Part 2 is that it's not just him, every single character is a step above the previous cast. His rival and friend Zeppeli makes for interesting and fun interactions. Stroheim is probably the only Nazi people would support, because his passion is amazing, which I guess passion is not something we want Nazis to have... uh... you know what? Lets just skip that boy. The villains here are also much more interesting than Dio. They aren't just evil, they have respect for their opponents, which is interestingly a contrast to Joseph, who despite being the good guy, is more prone to throw a cheap shot in the name of good, than our villains are in the name of evil. And never forget Lisa Lisa, which is considered one of the pioneers of strong women in shonen manga!
I still think that Battle Tendencies has a good amount of flaws and problems that stop me from naming it anywhere close to a favourite of mine, but I think that it's a good example of how one detail can make something infinitely better. The cast on this one is the MVP of the entire manga and it very much carries it and makes it an enjoyable experience from start to end!

90/100An epic spectacle of absurdity that reaches a climactic finale.Continue on AniList__Battle Tendency__ is the 2nd part of the __JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure__ manga, covering chapters 45 - 113 (volumes 5-12), written and illustrated by Araki, Hirohiko. Set in 1939, 50 years after the events of Phantom Blood, we follow Jonathan's grandson the beloved Joseph ''JoJo'' Joestar. After the events with DIO and the stone mask, the latter's creators, the Pillar Men awaken from their 2000-year slumber and seek to become “Ultimate Life Forms”.
Battle Tendency from my view is outstanding. It is an immensely enjoyable adventure while fixing the faults of its predecessor. Having a much more interesting and funny new main character, better side characters, larger scope, great threatening villains, and some intuitive fight scenes. It is an epic spectacle of absurdity that reaches a climactic finale.
The new JoJo is the highlight of part 2, while a far cry from the gentleman like persona that Jonathan had, he is an intelligent and creative fighter with an immature/comedic personality. Joseph is an exciting character to follow through the events of the story and the many battles, being a tactician he tries to outwit his opponents, carefully thinking of plans or bluffs, while also using an assortment of varied objects that could help him out. His fights are enjoyable, epic, and manages to include solid humor within them.
Generally speaking, almost all the fights in Battle Tendency are fabulous and climactic. The fight between Joseph and Wamuu is arguably the best one, an epic deadly chariot battle with vampire horses. A mind battle between two fighting geniuses, keeping you guessing who will outwit the other first and come up top. Part 2 is also the last part to focus on Hamon as the main superpower, before switching to Stands. While Hamon was certainly short-lived, it did reach its peak in part 2 and would have become stale in continued parts.
Araki’s art has not evolved much from Phantom Blood. His art is still superb, but I believe he improved with the designs of his characters. The Pillar Men in particular have fantastic designs and the number of poses have been increased. It’s also exciting to see JoJo in various different settings such as Mexico, Italy, and Switzerland.
The side characters of part 2 are great, they have a lot more screen time and more characterization than part 1s side characters. Lisa Lisa fills the mentor role, and she stood out when the series was in publication since it was uncommon for female characters to fight. Cesar A. Zeppeli is a womanizer, rival, and best friend of Joseph, the two build great chemistry. Being part of the Zeppeli family gives off the implication that it is truly their destiny to close the chapter of the stone masks, to finish a battle their grandfathers partially closed. Stroheim is an eccentric cyborg nazi.. need I say more? And while the Pillar Men aren't as great as DIO, they are each their own character with their own fighting styles.
Battle Tendency is one of the most enjoyable manga I have read, the adventure, the fights, and the characters are all great. It an enjoyable journey worth reading. If you wish to read Battle Tendency I highly recommend it, the alternative option would be to watch the amazing anime adaption by David Production.
