50/100This movie is a fun time if your with kids and what not, and the animations is beautiful, but the story is lack lusterContinue on AniListI found this movie because I want to watch every studio ghibli movie. This was listed as their first one ever. The story itself is very ghibli, with no real plot or drive for something, just characters going about their day to day life. Except in this movie, the characters happen to be a girl and two pandas. Now the English dub is funny as hell. The big panda sounds like Patrick from spongebob. The voice acting definitely isn't the movie's strong suit. What I see to be the strong suit are its animations. For me, I love when the animation is either extremely detailed and refined e.g. (no game no life), or basic and older like in this movie. All the frames flow very well and the screen is appealing to look at. Nothing is sharp and everything has smooth visuals, something I would consider to be a strong point. Now the story is just that this little girl's grandma leaves for a few days and panda's that escaped the zoo move in with her. It's simple but somewhat enjoyable. You can see a lot of future ghibli concepts within this movie. It has a strong female lead, its slice of life with a little extra zest, and of course the beautiful artwork. ~!However in the plot nearly nothing eventful happens. It's all just the two bears and the girl talking and eating a little bit. except at the end when the baby panda falls in the lake, so the girl jumps in to save her. Even then that's 4 minutes of this 30-minute movie.~! Its definitely a bit of a slog to get through. All in all, if you have the time, watch it because it's the first-ever ghibli movie, it's definitely not their most enjoyable work, however you are sure to find some charm and beautiful artwork.
Voice acting 3/10: It was objectively bad and I should put it at a 2 to 1, however, the big panda's dub voice is too funny I swear that's one of the best reasons to watch this movie.
Plot 4/10: There really was no plot except these characters just chilling in a cabin. I'll give them 4 because their interactions were somewhat interesting, but not very.
Characters 5/10: The characters were somewhat basic, energetic little girl, funny but lazy panda, and cute baby panda. but there were some interesting interactions between them.
Setting 5/10: Just a cabin and a dam at some point its an ok setting, a little lackluster but enjoyable enough.
Art 8/10: as I said before I'm a sucker for more retro art styles in anime and this one is also fluid, props to these guys.
Overall 5/10: I'm going to give this a 50 because, while the art was indeed strong, everything else was just sort of average, it was an ok time, if you've got any time I say go for it but don't expect too much. Its a fun story about two pandas and a little girl, nothing more nothing less its fun if you let it be, just lay back and turn your brain off.
