80/100Alderamin is a compelling, charming military fantasy series with an MC who wins using his head instead of his muscles.Continue on AniListI was first introduced to the series in this thread, where /u/Shimmering-Sky mentioned loving battle couples. It was one of those tropes that I hadn't really realized I was fond of, but after finishing Alderamin, I'm certain that it's something I want to see more of. The main characters, Ikta and Yatori, work very well together in the ways that they play off of one another. One has brains, the other brawn, and their communication - verbal or otherwise - is impressive and endearing in a lot of ways.
The story involves the main character, Ikta Solork, ending up in the military after saving the Empire's princess, despite never having wanted to be a soldier due to his distaste for war. Alderamin is a military drama, for the most part, with underlying themes that cover ideas such as the senselessness of war and the importance of individuals rather than a nation.
The animation is nothing special, and the fights are short. It doesn't look impressive, but it doesn't look bad, either. The main focus of the action - and, by extension, the story - is Ikta's notable skill as a strategist. For anyone who likes smart, competent characters, I'd definitely say that Alderamin is a good choice. Ikta is lazy, a product of circumstance moreso than upbringing. However, this doesn't prevent him from acting when he needs to, and he's a character who places priority on the victory with the least amount of casualties rather than the most sound or crushing wins.
There's definitely a sense of fascination and curiosity that kicks in whenever the characters find themselves in a pinch. Watching as Ikta plans out his strategies is fun, and the series also likes to tell you that he has one without detailing it so that you can then watch it play out. The unwavering trust that Yatori has in Ikta and his methods of thinking is definitely one of the strong points of the series, with their interactions being definite highlights.
If I had to point out one thing in particular that I found bothersome, it's that in order to allow Ikta to shine, we have to suffer through numerous more rash or incompetent people who outrank him. While there may be characters who seem to be smarter and disagree with those incompetents, they, too, are outranked, but orders are orders and they must respect them. A lot of the drama, specifically towards the end of the series, is a result of this. On one hand, it's great to see Ikta and his squad in action, but on the other, you can't really help the feeling of "if these people were a bit smarter in the first place, this situation never would have happened."
One thing that I enjoyed outside of the premise is the way they portray some of Ikta's other traits. He's a womanizer, and he's seen often flirting with women, even having one encounter where he meets someone whose mom he'd slept with. However, he's not perverted in that sense; the anime doesn't resort to any of the standard pervert tropes. Ikta is never seen groping a woman, and his conversations are more flirtatious and suggestive in nature rather than just plain outrageous. While not necessarily unheard of, it is refreshing, especially considering that this is a light novel adaptation and that, in a lot of ways, it's one of the more guilty mediums of doing so.
I'd definitely recommend Alderamin on the Sky to people who like military dramas, battle couples or main characters who outwit rather than overpower their foes. While I can't say that there's anything exceptional or outstanding about the series, I can definitely say that there's something worth enjoying here.

50/100Must watch if you want a different meaning of hero!Continue on AniListFor the starter, at first episode i was really not hooked up by it, maybe because how the lips was drawn or maybe i still hasn't see something interesting. But as i watched the next episode, the story start to move, it start to show how the characters in the show has different uhmm... let's say perspective. The main characters are not ordinary, they're different from every supporting characters, they know how to question the order, or open their mouth when they think that the order given was not right. But that was the reason why this show if very unique in its own way. The characters cover each other up, what they lack or what was their weakness, while the supporting characters well literally support the main characters, like they are questioning the main characters why they do this or do that even though it's not very normal to do. The show was very balance the story was not dragged too long nor too short, well maybe it was dragged too short, So i'm hoping that the MADHOUSE announce a 2nd season for this anime, since the plot is very interesting. The plot was actually about ikta wanting just to protect the people he cared, not the whole country, he also have a different perspective about heroes. But as fate lead him, he was starting to deviate the path he wanted. First he became a soldier, second he start to show his potential as a great general/tactician, and third, at the last episode, he was assigned that he should lose to a war intentionally so that the country will be purified at its core. But if he do that, he will be an enemy of the igsem family, he will become an enemy of his childhood friend yatori and he will follow the path of his father. Well the stories revolve around military, it tells about how the military commanders used their own agenda and how greedy they are, or how fucked up. It tells that some commanders were being praised or climbing at the higher rank even though they aren't doing anything at all, even giving order they just passed it to their right hand general. They are raising to their ranks even though they don't deserve it or they aren't qualify in the position just because they are sucking someone's finger. This was a kind of anime that has a messages about the real world, about politics and military

84/100Alderamin is a noteworthy take on tactical warfare and political drama reminiscent of something akin to Code Geass.Continue on AniListI can't help but want to make an "All da ramen" joke whenever I say the title of the show in question, so I'll get it out of the way immediately. For starters, I'm extremely tired of these single season shows that fall under the "will never get a sequel, so go buy the light novel you mindless monkey with a wallet" umbrella and Alderamin is much of the same. Not necessarily content-wise, but because many of these are actually really poor, created to drive one to further pursue the source material (looking at you Tokyo Ghoul). However, Alderamin is, instead, really good, or at least, really compelling. In a way, it's actually nice that Alderamin never got a second season and thus I wouldn't have to experience the disappointing ending that I've seen alluded to as I researched a little bit after watching. I did end up spoiling a major plot point later for myself that further cemented the idea that, maybe, it's a blessing in disguise that this won't be continued, as it would just trample on the solid foundation Alderamin built for itself with this standalone season.
I'm going to be completely honest, I didn't really like anything that Alderamin did musically, so that's where most of the points come off in the objective and production categories. I will freely admit that I remember not a single song from Alderamin and skipped both the opening and ending every single time after the initial watch of them both. They simply did nothing interesting at all. In some cases, an unmemorable soundtrack can be fine, but in this case, I literally remember no songs. Rather poor work if you ask me. Sound effects were reasonably good, nothing really out of the ordinary or anything. Voice acting was really good in the dub, even if some of the characters were overacted, but I get the feeling that it was more of deliberate choice than anything.
Visually, Alderamin is pretty good. The character designs are unique and memorable and each stand out from one another, while still preserving the feeling that everyone is part of this grand imperial army. On top of that, the animation during battle scenes, but especially the duels, is superb. While they might not be the most brilliantly choreographed, they are fluid and pleasing to follow. Most importantly, I didn't really notice any poor frames or badly animated sequences, which is always a plus.
Favorite Character: Yatorishino Igsem
For the first couple of episodes, I didn't actually think this may be my selection, but Yatori and Ikta's backstory and consistent, lovable bond really drove her straight into my heart. I really loved that she was built into someone who was more than just a talented super soldier. She constantly grapples with her identity as an Igsem and what it means for her and Ikta if things were to change. It was almost tragic how they found themselves constantly in a position that one different step in their lives and she would be "forced" to kill him because of what her family stands for. She was such a compelling character and was my favorite character in the show by a mile, though Torway and Ikta make good arguments for themselves as well.
Now what didn't I love about Alderamin? I didn't necessarily love a lot of the weird morality that was in play sometimes. For instance, they have to commit some pretty despicable war crimes and kill countless people, all the while seeing their friends get murdered, but then when it comes towards the end and some of the people that they know who die, its all Ikta's fault and he's despicable. I understand the humanity in that, but they're at war and they're soldiers. They've already seen death and killed so many, but suddenly it's despicable. Seems like a weird time to suddenly grow a conscience, especially in the middle of a war operation. Poor timing if you ask me. There's a lot of this actually, especially revolving or directly with Ikta. It seems like he's immune to doing terrible things or committing war crimes, but then randomly he'll have a conscience. I'm overstating a little bit, but it doesn't make it any less annoying when it feels so inconsistent.
Honestly, that's all I could really come up with that I wasn't personally a huge fan of in Alderamin. I loved so much more of it. From the tactical take on warfare, to the phenomenal characters and their interactions, to the grand setpieces, to the political drama- Alderamin delivered in so many ways and, honestly, surprised me with its remarkable quality. I genuinely enjoyed watching Alderamin. There wasn't a single time where I felt like it dragged the pace or where watching it felt like a chore, it jumped from character interaction to story moment back to characters so seamlessly that it never seemed to lose its stride. I would also like to make a final point here that I'm really happy with the way that they handled the characters. None of them are particularly weak, but each have strengths and weaknesses like normal people. Ikta is a tactical genius, but doesn't offer much in a fight; Torway is an incredible marksman, but doesn't offer much in terms of close combat; etc. It really helps keep them consistent but grow in other, more personal ways, which is always far more gratifying.
I would give this a hearty recommendation to anyone who loves shows like Code Geass, with tactical warfare and political drama, even though it's fairly light on the latter. Obviously it's an incomplete adaptation, so unless that's an absolute dealbreaker, I would say to give it a shot, because it's a damn shame that this isn't a more popular recommendation for people looking for war and strategy anime.
