30/100Yet another interesting premise, wasted by poor story.Continue on AniListTrapped in My Daughter's Fantasy Romance is a Manhwa about a Korean mother getting isekai'd into her daughter's novel, that sounds like a decently interesting concept does it not? I'll get straight to the point, unfortunately this Manhwa is extremely mediocre, if not bad, in almost every other aspect.
I will start with the good. The female lead, now called Belita, acts pretty believable and it is very refreshing seeing your stereotypical Asian mother as a protagonist (although I know others). And that is it, that is the only good thing about this Manhwa. The art is for the lack of a better word, serviceable; not very good but not offensively terrible either.
The story? As per isekai tradition, she wants to go back to her original world, regretting that she didn't treat her daughter better before she died; but on god is it executed painfully. There is nothing worth talking about on the setting, it's just your generic medieval nobility fantasy world. Hell the setting is practically wasted and unutilized, she doesn't get involved in your typical high society charade that one might expect from the setting. Not only that this Manhwa went a step further, this whole novel is just the daughter's outlet for her "I can fix him" fetish and allegory for her mom succeeding at "fixing" her deadbeat dad (they're divorced irl), it's pretty wild. I'm saying this not to kinkshame, it could work, but it didn't work because we don't really care about Belita and especially her daughter; the Manhwa barely gave any semblance of reason for us to care about the characters.
For all intents and purposes, the daughter were raised well enough and have a good relationship with her mother; there's no bad blood, and she seems like a sane well functioning member of society (in summation, she's fine and normal). Yet the story keeps expecting the reader to be on board with Belita for wanting to go back on the basis that her "poor" daughter still (for whatever reason) need her mom to pat her on the back, but we know she's already an adult who were about to get some work, so it fell flat. Or perhaps I'm reading too much into this and we're just supposed to sympathize with your average insane and emotional Asian parent just for the sake of it, she might be believable but she is far from likeable (she's not a very nice nor endearing character); for the author to make us care for her plight is to be frank, a big big ask.
The romance? Absolute travesty. Not to mention how creepy things gets when you sit down for a moment and think about it (and this is coming from someone with high creep and degen tolerance). All except one of her "love interests" got parent issues, you won't find any heartfelt moment whatsoever nor do you get a chance to spend time with much of the characters other than Belita.
The biggest issue is there are no genuine relationship because the female lead doesn't care, hence we don't care, couldn't care less about the characters along with her. This might work if there's something, anything that we can get invested in, but there's nothing. The ending is surprisingly rushed even by rushed endings standards, it is very likely that this got axed and they just had to wrap things up so ungracefully. All in all the whole Manhwa is carried, yet at the same time, brought down by the female lead. It's really a shame because with only a few tweaks, this would be a decent story.
Trapped in My Daughter's Fantasy Romance gets a solid 3/10 from me.
I recommend the Manhwa [Mom, I'm Sorry] if anyone want to read another story with a Korean mother as a protagonist.
