Pretty little animated music video, with a good song to boot, but not sure what the animation was going for.
Huh. Never thought I'd see the day I'd review a music video of all things. I've never reviewed a music video before, and I doubt I'll start doing that in the foreseeable future, because there's a lot that goes into reviewing a music video. Seeing as I'm not entirely well versed in music or the production of music in general, I doubt I'm in a position to really do so, even on a casual level. But one day I was bored and thought why not, so I decided to try my hand at it. The animation is very reminiscent of early 2000s pop art, with bright colors, neon lights, and pixel art for the video game segments. Those video game segments are admittedly very adorable. The song is pretty nice too, with strong vocals, a good beat, and great use of saxophones, though the singer's voice does border on being a little bit screechy at points. Thankfully, those parts are very few in number, and didn't detract from my enjoyment of both the song and the animation.

But what confuses me is what the animation is trying to convey here. It looks to be telling the story of a girl (Does anyone else think she looks like a slightly younger, shorter haired Swindler from Akudama Drive? Because I do) wanting to kill some time, waiting for time to pass before her laundry's done at the laundromat, but then it just sort of devolves into a bunch of random nonsense. What's the deal with the blue haired girl who beats up the main girl when she loses the arcade game? She just comes out of nowhere, disappears, then comes back again with little rhyme or reason. What exactly is her purpose? And what's up with the cute moe hedgehog? It's cute and all, but I'm not sure what its purpose is supposed to be, other than just being shoved in there for the sake of cuteness. Eh, telling a cohesive story isn't exactly what music videos are primarily for, though it can be done. I've seen plenty that have done just that. Remember the famous "Video Killed The Radio Star" music video? The story behind that one continues to be relevant to this day, and that's not even mentioning the work put into its production. Or maybe I'd understand the video better if I looked up the lyrics to the song Mirror Tune. I will say though, I've never heard of Zutomayo before this, but based on how good this song is, I'm kind of interested in seeking out more of their work.

So yeah, I guess I’m not really cut out for reviewing music videos. But I liked what I saw here, and I hope the animators who worked on this will go on to do more things, as the work they put in is very inspired and full of homages to various video game genres, like fighting games, horror games, and visual novels. But other than a bit of confusion as to what the actual music video is meant to be about, I liked this decently well enough. I doubt I’ll come back to it in the future, though.
