"my suffering isn't beautiful" but your survival isContinue on AniListone of my favorite reads from this year. a masterpiece readers shouldn’t shy away from simply due to its classification as a work under the BL genre. i feel like the tags here don't do it justice but its a really heavy and realistic work about an SA victims journey and how it affects them in grisly ways. generally i dislike how most BL manhwas utilize the topic of sexual assault but ouroboros just went above and beyond, i don't think i was ever disappointed while reading this one. i love and respect the author (Songhyel) so much. fantastic execution of how trauma isn't supposed to be pretty and healing isn't linear. and boy does it have some of the most depressing sex scenes i have ever read.
the cover honestly ticked me off at first as i thought it was just another one of those messy love triangles which i personally find distasteful but they were nothing like that. they showcase how beautiful human relationships are and that you cannot be fixed nor broken by one person like magic. that love is important. that love (of others but ultimately of yourself) can save you. safe to say its one of my favorite manhwa covers now because it just hits more as the story progresses, they both just want to love this guy fr :)
one of my favorite relationship dynamics in media honestly. to say its either romantic or platonic is too restrictive. this makes them kind of unique to me in a way. boguk and sujos love for woo hyung did not save him per se but instead urged him to carve his own path. in the vast ocean of his world, they were simply the ripples but at length he is and will always will be the propeller. as he himself said, they are the stars that will continue to watch over him in the world he built for himself. their love for one another encapsulates how its like to just love somebody as a person, to love someone just because you care for them and earnestly hope for their wellbeing and happiness. to be loved not for what you can offer but instead to simply wish for your recovery. a relationship that embodies all forms of love. to perpetually involve yourself with others, to live and to die. to restart and try all over again, like an ouroboros
my vocabulary is not profound enough to express how this work has affected me but i really admire how raw Songhyel lays down these characters and their relationships, theyre so humanized. overall, i just i really like how woo hyung (mc) picked himself back up through his own actions. that ultimately, he is where he is at the end of the story because he chose to love himself :) and that it was majorly influenced by the people who love him, who are dear to him. i like them a lot heh
