80/100The early parts are a lot of porn, stick it through and you'll be rewarded with a good story.Continue on AniListFull, minimum spoilers review of What Happens Inside the Dungeon.
This series is not peak fiction, I'll say that right away, despite that I've got it rated a 10/10 on my profile, that's not an accurate rating really so I've decided to write my first review and explain why I gave it such a rating.
First and foremost, it's a hentai. Not inherently a bad nor good thing, I believe this series has both benefitted and been harmed by the simple fact of it's a hentai.
Because it's a hentai, it's automatically 18+ which means out the gate everyone working on this got full creative liberty, not having to pull anything because of the audience.
However, there definitely feels like times when it feels like they're forcing the hentai aspect in, namely in the end of the main story.
Something that falls because it's a hentai, the villains, half of the monster villains in the series are complete perverts, sometimes being a disgusting pervert is their ONLY trait, if you've read it you know which one I'm talking about.
Now, this makes it sound like it's only negatives that it's a hentai, nuh-uh, my favorite example of it being a hentai that benefits it, the entirety of one character, a samurai monster who is a literal walking penis the size of a person.
A human sized penis, was a genuine threat the main trio (fish doesn't count) had to face. Now going past the just hentai part, I'm going to take more about what things he series does well and poorly.
Starting with the biggest offender of poorly done work. The early parts of the manga.
Nudity there, sex here, masturbation everywhere. There was story being built, just behind a pair of boobs.
The story doesn't get any plot-holes because of the early part, or any inconsistencies or anything, it just starts off with SO much porn, letting the plot take a backseat for most chapters.
That being said, the plot took a backseat, but they never stop building the world at the start, some stuff doesn't show up again because of how the journey goes, but given what we're shown with Hoss, I can't fully discredit the start, despite it being it's weakest suit.
That said, once you reach the turning point, aside from the women still for the most part having clothes be against their religion, it turns into a well built world with mostly enjoyable characters and a coherent enjoyable series.Next is one of my favorite parts of the series: the main trio and their growth.
Not going to tell you this is master class writing, it's not but it's done well, especially Cheong and Chun-Ja, they're listed as the two main characters for a reason.
They don't get some insane story arc, something that completely and totally changes them or rewrites them entirely but you do see individual growth in each, something that I, a primarily action manhwa reader, doesn't see much really.
Be it getting insight into why Chun-Ja is well, just like how she is in general, why Cheong came to the dungeon in the first place, how she handles roadblocks and grows.
Nothing is ever completely redefining a character, cause that's usually not how people work, I don't remember any moments where a character acted in a completely out of character, random way, it always made sense. Now to some neutral parts, both good and bad at times.
I mentioned the villains briefly before, and I really think it's one of the main issues with the series, however at the same time, I think it was intentional.
Opher, the king of the monsters, is a good character, simple, sure but not every person has some complicated backstory and desire, Opher is simply the strongest, tired of it and wants to die to a stronger opponent.
The flower thing, can't remember it's name but it does well as being a intimidating threat, being essentially a dark mage casting curses and the such, no sexual desire or anything, usually following Opher's will but occasionally being a more threatening pressence than Opher himself.
Then, theres that Goddamn Troll, large enough that you're smaller than a section of his fingers, powerful enough to be the one the group fights for MC to get her power boost, with regeneration capable of saving him from virtually any injury... and he's just a giant pervert that wants to sexually abuse people. This character is the only character I just outright hate, I know it's not a unrealistic character but beyond it being gross, he feels like a poorly written character.I don't want this review that not many people will even see to last forever, so I'm gonna end it here, there is more I could talk about, but if you've made it this far, just know I think it's well worth a read.
