99/100They are indeed, "ordinary".Continue on AniList__Intro:__ Nan Hao Shang Feng is a comedy about "ordinary" high school boys. It is simultaneously paradoxical and not. To use the word "ordinary" suggests no special qualities whilst also asserting the fact that said "ordinary" is indeed a ton of stupid interactions. The idea that absurdity in high schoolers is so common that it is no longer unordinary is nothing short of amazing. I mean, what did you expect from high schoolers? It is quite a clever way to describe the entire thing and nothing could be more fitting. Reminds me of some variant of "the boys irl" meme.

__Review:__ Nan Hao Shang Feng is an exemplary school comedy that I've seen in recent times. Being able to present sometimes relatable, or at the very minimal, realistic, interactions between the two main characters themselves in such a way that is not only immaculate but also extremely funny, delivering the joke perfectly. Every. Single. Time. It is truly unbelievable that such a thing could even exist.
As a whole, there isn't honestly a lot to go on about with Nan Hao Shang Feng other than the aforementioned statement of what it boils down to. Each individual chapter is way too simplistic, which in itself is no problem at all (it actually benefits). It may come across as an issue to some, but it serves well in the grand scheme of things in this up and down world of fast-paced cuts of high school life. I do suppose nothing lasts so long anyway, even worse if the joke did. That only happens if something truly major goes down, which is rare for a real situation and is not seen in this webcomic either. Another thing I can really talk about is the chapter content, which again, is nothing out of the ordinary relative to average high school life. It is all just amplified in the hilariously real atmosphere the world has to give.
It brings me nicely to the execution I should say more about. In comedy, there is this tendency to use jokes and repeat the execution, process, point, and humour across, reiterating to the point of it being "ok yeah that was good", but nothing truly meaningfully funny. You have comedies where "haha he fell over and touched her boobs, he's going to get punched in the face now" completely saturate an entire anime to the point of you literally knowing what will happen next. Sure, I would say that it can still be funny (I still find them funny at times), nothing is inherently unfunny, but that kind of consistency, be it in a world that doesn't even have such logic in a (hypothetical) reality, literally ends up being the equivalent of fried bread. This is partly what makes Konosuba a really good comedy, it just takes the piss out of isekai with an honest cast of characters and setting. Nan Hao Shang Feng's realism with a direction that makes sense and is more honest to its own world really makes the webcomic only expel high-quality funny moments that you can read nonstop and still find funny.
The art is a huge help in this webcomic and might be a reason for why it is so good. Sure, the entire thing is scroll down for more with panels taking most of the width on the screen, but with detailed moments, be it blur/dash effects to show ungodly speed, or dynamic shots to emphasise the mood, you place yourself in an environment where really anything can happen and it still be the funniest thing you've seen since Pickle Rick. Here are a few such moments:
I should say that the character design in themselves aren't bad at all, it probably is more fitting in some aspects of making this more believable (whilst concurrently not, I suppose).
One last thing I want to touch on before I leave is the ho-yay factor. Sometimes that feeling does come across, and honestly, at least for me, it doesn't harm this in the slightest. It makes things a little more interesting if in all honesty. Only wanted to go on about this for new people getting into this webcomic, it is something that I don't know if such comes up a lot for chinese comics, but considering how people sometimes impose that one story in a medium must mean all is the same (I mean look at the negative stigmas of anime non-watchers have), I thought I'd touch on it to say that it isn't even bad here (probably even negligible), and other comics may not be the same, although I haven't read much manhua to be fair.
__Final Words:__ I was supposed to write a review for this long ago but never did because I apparently never have time to do stuff like this anymore :(, but I got there in the end, so that is cool I guess. Plus there are no reviews for this already, which is odd to me since this is very popular. Guess I will be the first then lol.
All in all, this is something you really want to read and I'd recommend it for people who want to go a bit diverse with a bit of manhua. In saying this, however, this is one of the few titles that are actually really good so once you take this, I honestly have no clue what is left for you. But hey, at least you would have seen something amazing that isn't just manga I guess.
I'd also highly recommend the following for the reasons:
https://anilist.co/manga/85850/19-Tian/ Higher ho-yay than Nan Hao Shang Feng, also has the same style and is pretty damn funny (not as funny tho). A little more serious story in a good way. https://anilist.co/manga/85734/SQ-Begin-WYour-Name/ Probably the most ho-yay of the three. Incredibly wholesome, and probably the best girls' love story I've read thus far. Same style. Also quite funny. More plot than episodic to it too. Also because I mentioned it:

I promise it is very good. I'd actually be more surprised if you haven't watched it lol.Douzeries
100/100An ode to youthContinue on AniListUseless storytime : I was bedridden with a somachache and I wanted to read something to distract myself from the pain. This is when I found Nan Hao Shang Feng. I had never heard of this chinese comedy & slice of life before so I was like yeah let's give it a try.
You better believe my stomachache got worse.
(cuz I laughed too hard)
(in case you didn't get it)
__STORY__ Nan Hao Shang Feng is hilarious. A huge part of why it's so funny is due to how relatable it is. This manhua is absurd. The most common things happen but each chapter feels like an adventure because of how it's told. We're in the mind of highschool boys. A broom is a weapon, riding a bike to go to shcool is rushing trough an hunchbacked desert on a motorbike. Any daily activities become epic. There are characters who straight up have animal as heads, scary students are unbielievably muscular and mc's crush is a blondie with blue eyes. Every trait of character is exaggerated due to the boys POV. We're in their world. Within all this dizarray, though, you're able to find a sort of stability. Why ?
Because at the end they're just like us fr. You quickly get used to their chaotic lives because in a way they are ordinary. Their craziness isn't uncommon for highscool boys. You get accustomed to their abnormality because these feel normal. They're odd, just like anyone thus they are common. This feeling of proximity with the main characters is very important because, at least in my case, it reassures me and give me a sense of comfort. Humans are very similar. I'm french and even at the other side of the world I can relate to chinese highschoolers. Seeing their mistakes, habits and ridicule selves makes me downplay the seriousness of life. We're all the same, your life isn't always a tragedy, you can find humor in everything. My life is a mess but I'm glad this mess is mine and they are millions and billions of people who have it worse than me. You may be lost or under a lot of stress but if you see the beauty of life, maybe just maybe you'll feel more free and realise everything you have.
__ART__ The art is actually incredible. I could have choosen dozens of stunning pages but I don't want to ruin your surprise when you'll scroll down and happen to see a case comparable to One's drawing skills in term of perspective and clothes movements. It's that willd. The style perfectly fits the content. The author knows when to blur characters, make their faces unseeable or overly exagarate their facial expressions or poses.
__CHARACTERS__ I love them. At first you only see characters for their role in the story. The class president is the class president, the best friend is the best friend etc but they gradually become more and more nuanced and you get to know their personality better. They're all endearing teenargers with endless potential and relatable struggles. You root for them as you want to keep seeing more of their lives.
__CONCLUSION__ I hope I made you want to read Nan Hao Shang Feng in this short review, it's a meme machine and an emotionally captivating story. As much as it is exaggerated it feels real. I personally usually read manga and manwha so it was very intersting reading a slice of life manhua. I discovered their culture, the diminutive they use and an idea of how schools work there. Some people might think that this is just an irresponsible feel good story glorifying adolescence and I perfectly understand that. But because of what I said in the Story section, I think it is more valuable than that and I think making light of our lives sometimes is better than overthinking it.
Due to the art, humor and themes, this manhua heavily reminds me off Grand Blue, I often like to reffer Nan Hao Shang Feng as the Chinese Grand Blue or vice versa. The plots are completly different but I feel like it's the same spirit in and out. Also check that out if you haven't.
