Shounen no Abyss is a deep dark story. The name itself gives of a dark vibe but once you start reading it, you know that things are only gonna get messed up. Not in a bad way. Well... bad for the characters but not for the story. I really like the series but I wouldn't recommend for those who are easily offended. In one word you can call this "Edgy". I like this but every time I come to check if there is any new chapter I actually hope there isn't because I can feel what the characters are going through when I read it. You can feel that things are only going downhill but you can't do anything. You feel their helplessness. Each chapter just messes everything up even more than the previous one. Some chapters can feel like there wasn't much development but it still ends up messing up the story even more. Those chapters might make you feel it even more. The story has a really dark and mysterious vibe. There are so many questions left unanswered. Each character is very different from the other. They each have their own circumstances. All their lives get tangled up and creates such a good story. They all want to leave the city but fate has them all tied down to this city where they all are searching for freedom, a bit of happiness. Even if they want to leave the city, they can't. They continue to live their miserable life holding on to the last strands of hope. They have no control of their own lives. They are stuck in a predetermined cycle of fate. I think a lot of people won't like it but I would recommend giving it a try at least. The art style itself gives off a dark vibe. Everything combined gives off a realistic story where you feel like you are a part of the story as well. It's Seinen for a reason. There is no way this ends with a happy note and this is not a spoiler. I know it's still ongoing but if you read the first chapter you'll understand. The story just draws you more and more. In short, Shounen no abyss is a heavy dark story where the MC meets a girl and his life starts changing. Which is pretty common in anime. But the dark and heavy aspect is what makes it so different from any other anime or manga. It's the cycle of life where MC and other characters are stuck and are unable to escape. The story doesn't stretch it and gets straight to the parts which hit you hard. Not for the weak heart. I don't mean it in the sense of horror but in general. If you're offended or get sad easily then this is not for you. Be prepared if you're going to read this. Lets see what the author has in store for us. I don't see a happy ending coming but I hope it is because it won't be good for my heart otherwise. Judevin
20/100An edgy convoluted uninteresting mess that only exists as some kind of fetish materialContinue on AniList_Trigger warnings about suicide, depression, gaslighting, manipulation, taking advantage of a minor, and many other topics. If you're affected by any of these, please do not read this manga._
__Story__ The plot and the setting is pretty straightforward for this manga at the start before it becomes a crazy convoluted shit show of edgyness. You have a 17 year old named Reiji in a small town that he can't leave because of his responsibilities and his duty to his family. This is established right in the first chapter, that Reiji lives in his own "abyss". However, we are soon introduced to the other members of the cast, the "understanding" teacher, the "kind yet troubled" mother, the "loveable" friend, and the "bully" childhood friend. And slowly as the plot unravels you realize that all of these characters have much more to them - much more sinister, than what the plot lets on (not in a good way). It feels like if you took Oyasumi Punpun's suffering and cranked it up to 11 just for the sake of it. Some might like it, some might not, really depends on the reader and what kind of kinks and fetish they have because this is not something the average person would enjoy in any way unless they have some sick fetish.
__Art__ The art is the only good thing about Shounen no Abyss and Minenami Ryo has proven themself as a good artist with Hatsukoi Zombie, and while that series was a ecchi romcom, this series has much darker moments, right from the start. The cover page of the first chapter is good enough to set the tone for the series overall. The characters are drawn to be cute and waifu'd up to look cute and appeal to the reader. That's how the series pulls you in. However, the art apart from that is nothing too special, it doesn't have those "sakuga" moments that Punpun has where the art is just really good, and you download it to use as a wallpaper. It does have excellent cover pages though.
__Characters__ The reader is provided with a range of characters, and outside of Reiji himself and perhaps Chako, most of them are very "messed up in the head". The protagonist Reiji is meant to be a relatable depressed character. He has no dreams, no hopes, nothing because he has to take care of his grandmother and older brother who is a NEET and support his mother. The following panel sums it up rather well. The "Abyss" as the title implies is the depressing life that Reiji is stuck forever in. This can be disturbing to read for some people so it is highly advised to not read this if you're not in a healthy state of mind and/or if you get affected by the media that you consume. There are other characters in the series, and I won't spoil any of the plot twists that might come for those characters. There is Nagi Aoe, an idol that is somehow in the rural town. Sakuko Akiyama or "Chako" - the character that cares for Reiji and has dreams of going to Tokyo. Yuko Kurose - Reiji's mom and a hardworking nurse, who is trying her best to support her family. Yuri Shibasawa - Reiji's homeroom teacher, a kind and understanding person. Gen Minegishi - Reiji's childhood friend, he's similar to Bakugo from BNHA to some extent. Kousaku Esemori - the writer of a story in the series called "Lover's Abyss".
__Enjoyment__ I really do not have much to say in regards to this. This is a messed up series, that you can enjoy from just the POV of the characters. I enjoyed it upto chapter 60 but afterwards it has become stale and pointless, some might still enjoy it as with every manga (subjective medium with subjective opinions) but I cannot say that I enjoy reading it anymore as much as I did for the first 60 chapters. It feels like a fetish/kink content with all the sexual assault and manipulation into having minors have sex or taking advantage of them. The series makes me feel sick with how it is written. I am sure some people will excuse it as "oh it's just fiction" but I really have to ask what the hell is wrong with the author that they're writing this shit. Like what is going on inside their head to write up something this sick and messed up.
__Overall__ I think this series can be best described as a dumpster that is on fire rolling down multiple flights of stairs because how shit it is. The writing is extremely convoluted and super edgy to the point that some elements only exist to be edgy. Like sexual assault, or grooming a minor, manipulating a minor into having sex with you. The series is just edgy beyond belief and I have a strong feeling that the author is letting out their repressed fucked up thoughts with this manga because most of the edgy topics have no reason to really exist. 69/100Welcome to "Boy's Abyss". Here we have psychotic MILFs, suicidal idols, pp obsessed yandere teachers and so much more!Continue on AniListWHAT MAKES A STORY MATURE, EXACTLY?
_Darkness is often thought to be the factor that makes a story into something mature/ thought provoking. To some extent, this is true. "Conflict" is what drives a story after all, and the darker the story, the greater the conflict. This should ultimately result in a superior story.Or does it it?
Art - 8/10
Its hella good. That's all there is to itPlot - 7.5/10
This definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat, that's for sure. From shocking revelations and killer twists to the fucked up shit that keeps happening, this was most certainly an entertaining read. I literally read 59 chapters in 2 days and you're gonna do the the same, as long as you're not overly distressed by people doing depraved shit to each other. The Characters- 7/10
The characters here are a mixed bag honestly. Let's start with the good parts. The main character here, Reiji Kurose is a pretty well written character and his struggles have been fleshed out and depicted in a (mostly) realistic way. His conflicting emotions about those closest to him was perhaps the best part in the entire series and I look forward to the conclusion of his character arc. Next up, we have Kosaku Esemori, Yuko Kurose and Gen Minegishi, who are all intriguing characters in their own right and bring a lot of tension into the story, one of them being hella depraved (wont say who)Sadly, it goes downhill from here on. Chako and Yuri arent really that fleshed out and it often do shit just cause the plot requires them to. Nagi has great potential but so far, the writer hasnt really tapped into it that much, leaving her as a beautiful but hollow girl with an almost criminal lack of presence in the manga.
Themes and Execution - 6.5/10
The series is very ambitious when it comes to themes - which include suicide, depression and sexual exploitation. Developed well, this could have been something amazing. Sadly, it falls quite a distance short when it comes to execution, something that becomes very apparent once it starts portraying double suicide as romantic and desirable. Aside from that, a huge part of it is the premise itself exudes a constant aura of doom and gloom. This, ultimately, doesn't make sense a lot of the time. The town is nearly always portrayed in a negative light and it is implied that the psychological scars on most of the people here are an effect of the environment they grew up in...….. except the town doesnt actually seem that bad. Rural life can be boring and neighbors may be a bit too nosy, sure. But all of it really doesnt justify how fucked up the characters and their actions are. I'm sure it'd be incredible had the series adopted a more balanced approach as to its setting.A few of the characters also seem off in this regard, as it often seems unreasonable for them to this horrible as people. Its perfectly believable to have an unapologetic lunatic in your series, but if every single one of the characters is a psycho, readers will start to question "why" and "how" they ended up that way, and for the most part, the series really fails to answer that satisfactorily. A story with only despair and no hope is just as unrealistic as a story where the opposite is the case. If I were to answer the question I posed at the beginning of the review, I'd say that a mature story is one where light and darkness are proportionate to one another. Going by that definition, "Boy's Abyss" is a a juvenile story with a lot of mature scenes and complex themes that it fails to execute properly
