69/100Don't watch this movie with high expectationsContinue on AniListSpoiler Alert!
Josee to tora to sakana tachi is a story based on a wheelchair-bound girl called Josee(as seen on the cover) and the boy Tsueno. Trailer was extremely well received, Eve is singing the theme song, animation looked good and story felt emotional from the trailer, sounds like a great setup, right? RIGHT!!
Well let's jump to the actual review
Story - 4/10, weakest link
Starting with the most important part(for me) for any medium, Josee's story is... sub-par. Within first half hour you can get the smell of cliche. Boy meets girl, they don't vibe, spend more time together for a reason, develops feeling and few problems and obstacles later they hold hands(lewd). THE END. Story is the weakest link for the anime and most of the time there is not much explanation and deep reason behind the characters motivations. Stuff just happens, deal with it.Animation - 9/10, strongest link
Animations was awesome. I loved the camera angles, waves, water, background. What the anime lacks in story makes up in animation. First few minutes were orgasmic with the camera work and also no noticeable drop throughout.Character Designs - 7/10
I don't know if it's just me but the male protagonist heavily reminded of the protagonist of "I want to eat your pancreas". Character design looked almost copy and generic. Second male character design actually looked better than the main which shouldn't be. To sum up the male side, designs are generic and forgettable. Now the Waifus tho, beautiful designs, although still a little inspired, but still great. Josee's design was a breath of fresh air and her transformation was THE THING. Mai's design was perfect from the beginning although she did remind me of hanabi from scum's wish when she acted like a bitch once.I may have a thing for short hair but there's now way to proveSound and music - 7.5/10
Voice acting is better than good. You can feel the emotions in some moments. I really enjoyed the theme song, although, might be unpopular opinion but it isn't the best of Eve. Music fits the anime where it's supposed to but a part of me expected more. I expected to feel a lot more emotions after the trailer but unfortunately it is what it is. Overall pretty good.Overall rating - 6.87/10
Finally, i would like to end by saying it's up to you to watch it or not. You are not going to miss anything if you stayed away from it. It's not another "Your Name" or "Silent Voice" although there is no point in comparing.Tl;dr - I had expectations from this movie and it didn't stand up to it. Don't get your hopes up, some might rate it but its borderline good at best. Animation is awesome and best part of the movie. Story is pretty average, voice acting is good and music felt great.

Story(9/10) and characters(8/10)
Josee, the tiger and the fish is a pretty cliche story as people have pointed out but romance movies be like that. I think the story was mostly good and satisfactory. There were instances like when Josee got mad at mc at his workplace and Josee’s grandmother's death where the pace was pretty fast but it’s a one and a half hour movie so I guess it's to be expected. In a sense I'm glad since fast pacing does make cringy moments go faster too and prevents stuff where it takes a long time for the characters to in example make up after a fight. I hate when it sometimes takes like six episodes in some romance series. Not to say that there were a lot of such moments in Josee, quite the opposite actually.
The dynamic was rather interesting having Josee be impaired and all.
Even though the movie didn’t have any major tragedy vibes to it, I was still pretty scared when the mc got hit by a car. I'm glad it didn't go down that route though. No pancreas for me, thank you very much.
So in conclusion, 9/10 for me but I do see why others wouldn’t rate the story so highly.
Tsuneo
Mc was normal. The kind and proper type. Nothing wrong with it.Josee
She couldn’t walk so then the mc became the one to support her and she became more independent too. If I remember correctly it was implied that she was 24 so the mc truly did have a great impact on her since she was just kind of at a standstill before. Pretty wholesome and enjoyable. Also I really liked her voice actress.Grandma
She was kind of grumpy and I thought that she just didn’t know what was best for Josee but I guess she acted how she did because of past experiences with Josee probably getting in some dangerous situations. In the end she was happy with Josee having Tsuneo supporting her. Very nice and cool indeed.2nd girl
I guess she did exist huh?Audio(9/10)
The OST was pretty great and it fit well but it's not my favorite music genre or anything so I can't give it a 10/10. I was pretty surprised that there was an insert song and an ending song by Eve though, those were great! Glad to see that he is doing more songs for anime. It's a movie so sound effects were top notch as expected.
I also especially liked Josee’s voice actress. She had a pretty deep and unique voice for an anime voice actress. She has had only one role before playing Josee which is pretty surprising. Definitely looking forward to her acting in the future.
Visuals(9/10)
Overall the animation is awesome and there were some cool rotating shots but there were some pretty rough frames in the mix too. They didn’t really bother me but still.Backgrounds were outstandingly well done and I think that's why the roughly drawn frames really did stand out at times.
It had the movie treatment with blur effects and the red and blue effect kind of like a lense distortion, don't know what to call it but yeah good stuff.
Saying a bit about the character designs and such, they were normal. Honestly I’m not sure just how they could even deviate from the norm in a story that has a realistic setting. I Definitely prefer this over having all the colors of the rainbow presented in the main cast’s hair colors.
Enjoyment(9/10)
I knew what I was going to watch and what I wanted and so I sure got what I came for. In short, I really enjoyed Josee. Satisfying story, great music and good visuals, what is there not to like? But I guess the watchers’ enjoyment will vary greatly depending on what expectations and wants they had, of course. I saw some discussion about the story being bad because it is cliche and honestly I think they just don’t like the romance genre since there really aren't that many ways for an hour and thirty minute romance movie to play out.
That concludes this review. I’d appreciate it if you, yes you, would leave a comment on my profile about what you thought of the review. While I don’t do or plan to do reviews for the sake of others, it’s always cool to hear people’s opinions. Thank you for reading.

45/100Was I supposed to like Josee?Continue on AniList__The Calm Before the Storm__ I'm sure I'll get a lot of shit from this review. Just to prepare the people who love this film who also bother to read the review for some reason, I didn't really like it, it has many things in it that are fairly bad and for that my rating is low. Also, spoilers ahead.
Edit: I took out the theming/messaging part because I wasn't really saying anything and what I did say was kinda dumb tbh.
__My Main Gripes with Josee__ I find Josee to be a horrible person even though she's clearly supposed to be likeable, over the course of the film she treated Tsuneo horribly and expects his service in return just because she's in love with him and doesn't want to be vulnerable. At the very end with the story book was a good moment showcasing her appreciation of him throughout the course of his employment under them but it doesn't erase how she treated him. Plus, she was the sole purpose of him getting in an accident that could have fucked up his whole life, he did not deserve that, he shouldn't have suffered that consequence even if eventually he got better.
__My Main Gripes with Mai__ I find Mai who loves him to be disgusting as well, her jealousy reaches the point where he tries to demoralize Josee even after her Grandmother dies, she's just piling on sadness in her so that she can feel defeated. She also chose to say that she loves Tsuneo in his most vulnerable moments where he's very upset after getting injured, she clearly does this as a play to get him to love her back. She also even says how she wants him to stay the way she is so that she could always take care of him and be by his side and never leave which is disgusting, she should support him leaving and get him motivated to do so just like Josee did.
__Pacing/Structure __ The 3rd act of this movie is pretty messy. The first 2 acts were fine in establishing everyone’s characters, their relationships with one another, establishing their goals and ideals, showcasing the blooming relationship between Tsuneo and Josee and establishing the idea of leaving someone behind to pursue your dreams through Tsuneo and Josee’s relationship. In the 3rd act, after Josee’s grandma dies, we just get sudden conflicts. First is Mai, she’s just awful and speaks down to Josee to discourage her so that she can let him go. This comes right after her grandma’s death which was also very sudden and wasn’t really built up at all. Two things in a row that came out of nowhere to affect the rest of the movie. Now in Josee’s depressed state after all this has happened, when Tsuneo tries to go to her and comfort her, she pushes him away which is fine, that’s not the problem, the problem is that it affects Tsuneo. He gets in a car accident, and is punished. While this does give him a unique and better understanding of Josee’s feelings of frustration and depression, it also serves to put him down just so that Josee can be the one to build him back up later even though it was her fault he got like that in the first place since she ran away after he tried to speak with her. Then after he gets healed and everything, they added yet another conflict of Josee not showing up to pick him up after he had asked her to. In all honesty, I don’t really understand her reasons for not showing up, I didn’t understand what she was talking about with him doing it for her and not for him, but I’m sure that answer won’t satisfy me regardless. Then they meet up and the movie basically ends. Then in the after credits they show him coming back from the trip to visit and we get a scene between him and Josee that doesn’t really say or do anything.
__Final Thoughts__ This was a very frustrating movie for me and one I had a lot of trouble rating. Obviously the animation and art style in this film is beautiful and those underwater scenes especially are marvelous. But animation and art are just coating, once you actually bite into it, it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I found character in this movie to be lacking in general, Tsuneo and his guy friend who's name I forgot were both fairly cookie cutter characters to me but Mai and Josee were significantly worse by just being horrible people when I really don't think that was the intention. I liked Josee making the librarian friend and getting to connect with someone and I like what it leads to near the end of the movie in a beautiful scene where she tells the story. This was hard to rate since I felt like I wasn't being too harsh on it with my low rating, yet I got taken in by some scenes as well as the art and animation but I've reached my final verdict that it's still bad. It isn't horrible. I'll be honest and say my anger with this movie and the reason it's rated so low are more so for personal reasons than it is the actual product of the film being bad though there is some of that as well. I don't like overly cutesy stories, I don't like them redeeming Josee in the way they did, I don't like that the story necessitated that Josee was the one to put Tsuneo back on his feet so that he'd definitely choose her, I don't like Mai as a character, I don't like how they portrayed jealousy with how awful it made both Josee and Mai and I just wasn't really a fan of the characters in general. I came out of this movie with mixed feelings that eventually solidified in anger and frustration and my rating is a reflection of that.
__Signature Ending__ Hope you can enjoy this movie more than I did, form your own opinion and maybe even justify some of the things I dislike.
