DESCRIPTION
The nightmare that wiped out two thirds of the human race thirty years ago wasn't caused by germs. It was bugs on an entirely different kind of scale: bizarre insects that mutate their victims into half-human creatures that rapidly evolve into rampaging giant monsters!
Yet, as unstoppable as the monstrous insects seemed, humanity is as hard to kill as cockroaches, and exterminators like Kidou now spend their lives stalking and killing the creatures called Cagasters. As the brief still-partially human phase is the best time to strike, however, exterminators soon learn to distance themselves, socially and emotionally, from normal people. But when Kidou finds himself suddenly tasked with returning a young survivor to her mother, he starts to realize that his emotions and humanity may not be buried as deeply as he believed!

65/100*quiet snoring*......Continue on AniList(Originally reviewed on Serializd)
It had been a good while since I checked out anything anime-related, so I figured that I would go ahead and dive back into this cesspool of a sub-genre to see what else I could pull out and take a look at. Naturally, since this is me we are talking about, I didn't want to take a look at anything current, popular, or iconic, and instead go for something completely obscure that nobody cares about. It was then that I discovered Cagaster of an Insect Cage, and I said "Perfect!", and watched the entire thing in 2 days. From the look that the series was giving off from the name and promotional poster, it didn't look like anything too special or original, but hey, I figured that it would be a neat little distraction for a bit, and would have some fun action scenes. However, after watching the whole thing, I found it to merely be... ok. It did have the potential to be something really great, and there were definitely elements that I really enjoyed about it, but at about a certain point, I stopped caring about anything, and it stayed that way all the way up to the very end.
The story isn't anything original, being your typical apocalypse show with the typical characters, scenarios, and twists you would find in this type of show, but now with giant insects, which sounds like it would be a grand ol' time, but it once again, it doesn't take itself anywhere too exciting or original, the characters are mostly just whatever, with there being some characters I really grew to like, such as Kido, Ilie, and Mario, but the show doesn't focus enough on them as much as I'd like, and most of the other characters are nothing to write home about, the voice acting is average, having one or two good performances here or there, but most of the others are subpar and generic for a show like this, and then there are ones like Lizzy who have awful voice performances behind them, the animation is alright, with it looking pretty stagnant and weird a lot of the time, but there are plenty of parts where it can be pretty impressive and visually appealing, and it contains a lot of the familiar tropes that you would expect from a show like this, so any veteran that is familiar with anime will be well-used to some of the stuff that happens here, or in some cases, just tired of it.
I mentioned earlier that there was a point in the show where I just sort of lost interest and never got it back, and the point in question that I am referring to would be after the half-way mark, where the approach the show takes changes entirely. For the first six episodes, it was a much simpler story, mostly taking time to get us all introduced to the characters, the setting they lived in, their backstories, and some small little scenarios and action scenes that they get into at the same time. It wasn't anything grand or monumental, but it was enough to keep me entertained, and I did like seeing these characters interact with the things around them, meet new people, and develop friendships amongst each other. However, then episode 7 came around, and that is when I completely dropped off for the most part.
From here on, the show turns into a very typical action affair, with generic backstory revealed, generic twists and characters interactions, one or two good fight scenes here or there mixed in with a bunch of lame and lackluster ones, and a conclusion that leaves me feeling practically nothing from this whole experience. Not only does this show that this show has a huge lack of focus (which does effect the quality of the first half a bit), but it also doesn't have any sort of original or fun ideas, not wanting to give us many fun monster fights with all of the giant insects, and also pulling the whole "we were the bad guys the whole time" schtick, which is a trope I am not particularly a fan of, especially when it is done wrong. I will say, there is nothing wrong with any of these particular elements or the direction that the series did take by the second half, but if they wanted to make it work, they would've established that this was what it was gonna be from the beginning, having the same tone, style, and sense of storytelling from the beginning while working in plot points and relationship development more naturally, but since it was done this way, it manages to have less of a positive impact with me as a result, and I was just constantly looking at the runtime, waiting for the series to be over.
Overall, despite some enjoyable moments and episodes here or there, this show did have the potential to become something truly great and memorable, but squandered it way too soon, and only made it simply just alright as a result, doing a lot of things you would typically expect a show like this to do, providing nothing too new or revolutionary for the genre to latch onto, and making some odd choices that impact it negatively moreso then positively. I would recommend it for those who don't mind this kind of show, or any of the cliches both it and anime as a whole have provided, but for those who are looking for something new or exciting, this isn't it by a long shot. Seriously, you'd think for a show called "Cagaster of an INSECT Cage", there would be more emphasis on the insects that, you know, kinda ruined the world, wouldn't you say so?
