When Bakugan began emerging from the earth's crust in a mysterious worldwide "awakening," Dan and his friends find themselves at the epicenter of a new age. Dan and Company quickly learn that they must grow into more than just suburban kids looking for quick fame in the post-Bakugan era. They must learn how to work with their Bakugan and deploy them in battle in order to survive the seemingly endless forces out to control, enslave or just plain destroy the mysterious race of alien creatures. Dan and his friends will evolve into bona fide heroes by protecting their Bakugan, the Earth and ultimately the incredible secret hidden beneath our feet: Our planet has merged with another, living planet Vestroia.

9/100Pathetic Clone Reboot.Continue on AniListWell, this show have proven that the Bakugan Franchise should have ended with Bakugan Mechtanium Surge. Also, what's the purpose of this reboot. If the reboot isn't on par or better than the original, then why it exists?
Warning: Spoilers for Bakugan: Battle Planet, Bakugan: Battle Brawlers and Bakugan: New Vestroia.
Just to clarified, this show doesn't have any strengths other than the 2d animation. Unlike Teen Titans Go, this show has become an unintentional parody of the original Bakugan Series. Even the characters are a joke of their original versions. Dan, with Lia and Wynton, are the embodiment of Jake Paul, but with more sense of morality; Magnus isn't the next Masquerade/Spectra; he's just a missing character from “My Animated Stories” Channel, Tiko is the copy paste of Naga; Drago is pikachu; etc. The others characters are just irritating, pathetic, boring, full of themselves, and many more. Also, I'll love to include something about Lightning: He's a French bulldog. He's 18. The lifespan of a French bulldog is 8-10/9-12. How many proof should I write to prove that the staff members haven't done any research or brainstorming for the show. Anyway, in order for them to avoid creating character, they just wrote a dog (with human intelligence I think). Wait a second, the show have told the line "Adults can't activate the bakugans", then how Lightning manage to activate one? Does that rule only applies to the humans? I need to know because that line is responsible for the exustence of a plot.
Teen Titans Go knows what it wants to be, an episodic parody, nothing else. Which it would have work for this, if it wanted to appeal to the younger audience. Yet this show doesn't know what it wanted to be. The only reason I brought it up is because, I stumble upon some YouTube comments indicating: "The staff or director (I don't remember it very well) wants to it to be different than the original". I hope those were nothing, but lies. This show have taken characters and plots from the original, and yet claims to be different? That is fucking insulting. Writing of plots.
One of the aspects that piss me off, is that it’s literally copy-paste of the original. Unlike New Vestroia, BBP have done it for the worst. It introduced its first plot in the first scene of the first episode, and later it's follow with a mixture of slice of life episodic episodes as 'introductions' for the main characters and their partners, the bakugans. Also, some of its episodes are basically clones of its ancestors. Let me put some examples:
- The episode “Bully for You” is similar to “Secret of Success”. Both introduce a –couple of- kid(s) losing a match to some random bully. So, one(s) of our main cast helped them. In the original, Alice teaches him about using the correct cards for his bakugans and self-confidence. Of course, Alice was giving him advice during the first battle, but later on (after Alice disappearance) the kid manage to gain self-confidence (after his partner Juggernoid manage to talk and support him) and finally winning the second and third battle. As a result, the bully apologizes for being an a** and became his friend. Meanwhile in BBP, Dan doesn’t teach them any strategies or finding the flaws in their battle tactics, instead he just fights the bully himself and of course Cyndeous stops being his partner, because he doesn’t want to be a meanie head (questioning myself of why he didn’t abandon him before). Later on, Dan learns that his attitude was wrong and told his friends about it (force life lesson and simply doesn’t really matter since his over the top attitude wasn’t a big of a deal, none of his friends cared about it).
- The episode “Dog Daze” is similar to “Grandpa’s got a Brand New Bakugan”. Both rely on Shun staying/returning with/to the team. In the original, Shun didn’t want to, for personal reasons. So, Runo and Marucho challenge him to a battle. If they win, Shun will return. Spoilers, they lost! In consequences of their lost, Shun doesn’t return, showing us that he sticks with his promises, no matter if his opponents are his friends. And his morality keeps getting better. In the new show, Shun wanted to stay, because he feels being part of a family with his friends (even though, there wasn’t any build up to it, not a single scene of “his parents not giving him any attention other” than “the dinner scene”, why should I care). So after a ridiculous battle where his 100 G-Power Hydorous manage to beat an 850 G-Power Ninja-Gan with one … punch? He won. So yeah, the original Shun doesn’t want to return, due to the fear of losing his gift that his mother gave him before she dies. Not surprisingly in episode 13, he confronted Dan, Masquerade and Shun team up, Masquerade is beating Danny boy, so Shun decides to betray Masquerade. What’s funny is that episode 12 was a build-up for that episode. Meanwhile, the new Marucho just has attention issues. Needless to write, the new show replaces everything that made Shun compelling with a “want attention” character trope.
- Do you want me to continue?
The whole "Adults can´t activate Bakugan" is stupid. It only exists because the writers couldn't think of anything else other than overuse plots. When they manage to introduce new concepts that are breathtaking for the franchise, they manage to screw over them. The biggest example is the concept of "Bakugan affecting the modern world". The idea sounds amazing! Imagining how the existence of the bakugan randomly appearing into the modern world could change(for a mayor benefit or harm) the aspects of each country. But of course, that requires brainstorming and to raise the maturity rating which means less money from the dead cow. Returning to the plot. Just watch the episodes where the characters are set in Pakistan (I could be wrong about the name of the country). A fat bully is king because he has a bakugan, so what? And how did he manage to convince the adults to force the kids to give up their bakugan? Also, where are the criminals who coould take advantage of these kids? What about a rebellion? How come the poverty haven't worsen with that fat bully in charge? And I don't care that it's a kid show, the writers shoukdn't even bother with it at all. Pathetic attempt at Worldbuilding.
Now for the minor elements:
-
Gameplay (Show)
1.1 The Gate Cards were the ones that made it unique. But the reboot had gotten rid of them, so the Toy Battling Game can be more ‘complex’ for teenagers and adults. And the show suffers from it.
1.2 The Bakugans now has the ability to activate their moves without the BakuCores or anything else. For some reason...
1.3 In the show, the ability cards are replace with Bakucores. Bad move. The reason behind it is:
o Strategy isn’t need: This can be the case for the absence of Gate Cards as well. The Gate Cards, like Character Cards or Attribute Cards, have the purpose of not only boosting the G-Power of the bakugans, but also can change the game. Including some ability cards. Which, the players should use them carefully, especially when confronting the villains. But of course, they don't exist in the reboot. And the BakuCores are just … power boosters. Nothing else. The reboot should be an improvement of the original, not being the lame version. Sure, they aren't completely absent. But then again, it isn't needed. -
Bakugan
2.1 The mechanical designs just disturbs me. They’re just robots with organic eyes, tongues and teeth. It doesn’t mix well. And the 3D just makes it worst. The 3D robotic bakugans from ‘Bakugan New Vestroia’ looks a lot better, it helps by the fact they’re all 100% mechanicals with no signs of organic parts, from the outside. Thinking about it, it's really contradicting that all of the bakugans, especially Drago, are androids.
2.2 They’re just pokémons, but they can talk. When Dan and his gang encounters them, they immediately befriends them. Because … why not. And yes, they love to battle and brawl, and they don’t care about their home. It's hilarious because... the original recieved a stupid criticism of being a pokemon rip-off, and this reboot became it.
2.3 There are certain bakugan's designs that were an improvement over the original, and some the opposite.
2.4 Some of the designs for the bakugans are just lazy. For example:
- Trox: He’s a tyrannosaur. He has the height of a tyrannosaur. Therefore, he’s still a dinosaur. Which begs the question: why is he a monster? Being a robot doesn’t automatically make him one. Same can be written about Trhyno.
- Hydorous: He’s just a lion, a huge lion. Unless if some of you respond that he’s based on the Lion of Nemea with evidence of one of the staff members saying so. He just follows the whole “Abnormally Big Animal=Monster”.
- Fangzor: I like this monster. But it's still a giant cobra at the end of the day.
- Bear: ...look, I’m not gonna pretend that all the bakugans from the original shows are free of laziness. Just look at Serpenoid, Rattlenoid, Juggernoid, and Lonewolf; at least they have extra details to distinguish themselves from the animals they're based on. Meanwhile, bear is a fucking joke, nobody tried.
- Should I continue? -
Animation and/or Art Style
- 2D Animation: The art style fine. However, it has its own problems (static images, animation errors, stock footages, reuse images for some battle scenes, laziness of the ball forms).
- 3D Art Style: The 3D art style looks horrible. It wasn’t incorporated properly due to the rest of the animation being 2D. And it sucks, because: The 3D art style use for the robotic bakugans (Hades, Altair and many others) from “Bakugan New Vestroia” doesn’t look so bad. Which it’s funny, because it was from 2009-2010! And that’s not it. The 3D animation was use in terms of visuals, it difference them from the organic bakugans to show how lifeless they are. And look at the bakugans from the “Character Cards”. They’re also in 3D, but they look very well. The 3D art stle from Trollhunters is also so good, and it's from 2016! So, why they look terrible in this 2018 show?
- Music and Sound Effects
- The opening song is a rap song and it sucks. I wouldn’t have mention it, if it wasn't use in every final battle of every single goddamn episode!
- The roars and screams are pathetic, it's like a child was doing it.
- The roars of Drago have been use for some bakugans. Heck, Magnus' spider uses Skyress' call.
- The voice acting (dub) is bland. Really. The majority of the bakugan's can only be distinguish if it was male or female. The voices from the original are memorable, not all of them, so why are they lame in this reboot? The humans are okay, even though there are times where the tone of their voices doesn't match up with the situation they are in. A problem that the original also had. Isn't a reboot suppose to not commit the same mistakes of the original?
PD: This is one of those shows which introduces force life lessons, except it later becomes hypocritical since some of the characters forgets the lesson they have learn previously. And it also has the whole "Bakugan are our friends!" message thrown on our faces, over and over and over …
Conclusion
In conclusion, I may have been missing something, but I don't care. It seems that they made Season 2 and introduce the Battle Gears and later on, traps... It's going to get worse and I'm not going to bother watching them.- In my eyes, this is the worst reboot I have ever seen. Although, it isn’t the worst show, that title belongs to Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid.
- Nevertheless, I just want them to leave the franchise alone, let it die. But then again, they won’t stop until they stop making money from their merchandising.
