63/100Pretty much watches like a regular episode of goblin slayer, only perhaps a bit worse.Continue on AniListI should say that I wasn't the biggest fan of the first season of goblin slayer (side note, I have not read the light novel, so I can't review how well they adapted the source material, sorry about that). It always felt like they were trying to do too many things. The had ultra dark things (mainly in the first episode), but then tried to make other episodes more happy/ slice of life and that didn't personally work too well with me. BUT! I did enjoy the first season.
The movie tries to do a similar thing keeping the same quirky cast and filled with goblin gore. The beginning is pretty much a recap (till about the 25 min mark) and likely not worth watching if you saw the first season even remotely recently. So the beginning isn't too strong and without getting too spoiler-y the ending wasn't very strong either, coming short for the same reasons the tv show did.
The characters are pretty much the same as the tv show. Featuring the dwarf, elf, priestess, lizard shaman, and of course the Goblin Slayer, but with a new swordswomen (I honestly can't even remember if she had a name or not, or was just the noble women who became an adventurer, not even MAL or this site has her on the character rooster, which is somewhat weird since she is definitely a main character of the movie). Honestly I kinda dig the a lot of the characters, the dwarf is pretty amusing, the lizard dude is pretty cool in combat and likes cheese, and of course goblin slayer is pretty rad as well. It also seems like the Goblin Slayer is as little dumber than his television counterpart, but not to the extent that it ruins the film. (some of his strategies were eye roll worthy, but still fun)
The story is, unfortunately, the big weak point of the episode. Many other episodes in the first season are better thought out than this one is. If you are anything like me the main reason you kept watch the first season was because of the cool inventive ways of killing goblins/ other monsters. It was awesome when Goblin Slayer busted out the scroll and carved up the ogre. It was bad-a** when he used flour to blow the beholder to kingdom come. It had its wacky moments, like "goblins are coming from the MOON", but that was all fine since those other cool moments made up for that.
The movie has the weird story and some of the cool moments, but the cool moments don't come very close to the highlights of the first season. I don't want to be too harsh on the movie because I did enjoy it, but the story was not there, it felt like it would belong in one of my role playing game sessions, not in a feature length film.
One of my other favorite parts of the original series was the stakes. It always felt like do or die, where a single wrong move could mean your earlier demise. For me, that feeling was completely removed, no mistake ever felt like it was punished (at least for ol'goblin slayer's party). There was one moment in particular (this next part might be a bit spoiler-y for some, but I'm trying to keep this review free of spoilers) where the goblin slayer seems like he might be actual injured, but everyone in the party is like ¯|(ツ)/¯ "he's fine, I mean, hes the gob slayR" totally robbing any tension from the scene (this didn't even make sense to me, since how often he almost died in the first season, you'd think they would be at least a little worried).
What all this boils down to is that if you liked the show, you'll like the movie, or at the very least watching it wouldn't be a waste of your time.
It isn't very long, especially if you skip the recap, so there isn't much to lose.

**〈 A glorified TV episode that... 〉**
I did not expect to see an instalment of the Goblin Slayer franchise that is even lazier and more devoid of life than the TV series, yet here we are; witnessing a movie that begins with an approximately 25-minute recap combined with a voice-over narration from one of the characters. Of course, the scenes this movie decided to show us once again are only the most crucial moments, like the infamous rape scene from the first episode, the Elf character almost being raped, and Priestess lying naked beside Goblin Slayer. I am sincerely thankful for bestowing on me the opportunity to see these scenes for a second time. Without the said summary, I would unquestionably forget what every female character in this series boils down to; tits and rape. The movie reminds me of that yet again, merely 5 minutes after the recap, by implementing a tedious bath scene. Yeah.
As this instalment labels itself as a movie, I was eager to see improvements in the production values, yet, to my immediate realisation, there is no positive change to be found here. [In my write-up of the original](https://anilist.co/review/4517), I was a tad lenient on the art style in comparison to others though showed my immense disdain regarding the CGI, to sort of balance things out. _Goblin's Crown_ suffers from the same issues as far as the visuals go, and that is all I can say about that. There was and still is no personality or uniqueness when it comes to the art style, and the CGI is as wretched as ever. We can quickly spot it whenever an action scene takes place, and be delighted by the sight of appalling animation, horrendous camera movements and uninspired colour pallet. Naturally, Goblin Slayer still looks like a walking-talking trash bin whenever he is on the screen. He and various goblins effectively ruin anything resembling tension or excitement with their horrendous CGI bodies, armour pieces and blood. Lovely.
The same absence of development applies to the cast. Over the course of 60 minutes, we learn nothing extra about the main characters, and we meet new folks who are either killed on the spot for the sweet shock value or given the most basic personality and purposes. Ah yes, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing an individual whose entire character amounts to having flashbacks and mental breakdowns so unconvincing, that it is unbearable to watch. For instance, at one moment [the main new girl](https://anilist.co/character/188204/Reijou-Kenshi) remembers all the nasty and deplorable stuff that happened to her, and a second later she is all good because Goblin Slayer muttered something about killing every single goblin. So motivational! In the bargain, we can sum up the plot of _Goblin's Crown_ in one, compact sentence. Find the girl, dump irrelevant exposition about a God of some sort on the viewer's head, show raped women, kill goblins and jerk off to the Goblin Slayer's amazingness. It is that simple, yet has as much entertainment value as a funeral.
And you know what? It ultimately does not matter. As much as I loathe the TV series, at the very least it knew how to hold my attention and maintain my interest in it. This movie, on the other hand, feels like something so insignificant and meaningless, I was bored to tears through and through. It made me bloody exhausted, and that is all there is to it.
**〈 ...is somehow even more boring. 〉**

<hr width=50%, align=>
“Goblins aren’t smart creatures, but they aren’t too bright either.” They’re quick to learn and adapt, which is why none must be left unpurged. However, I’d say their greatest asset is their ability to be underestimated time and time again. That is why a quick quest embarked upon by a verdant group of novices quickly turns south. And when you have goblins, who ya gonna call? Goblin Slayer! He’s back, he’s wack, but most important, he’s always ready for an attack. With another convoluted plan, Goblin Slayer and gang trek to a frozen fortress ready to destroy the bastion of scum and save the day once more.
Overview
Basically an extra long episode that occurs directly after the final episode in season one. No real new developments or progress, but hey, the whole series is just a dude killing goblins, I’m not expecting the savior of anime. It’s not like a masterpiece, but compared to the first season I’d say it’s about the same overall and maybe slightly better in terms of visual appeal. It’s a good stand alone story that gets nicely wrapped up in about an hour. I enjoyed it, but I’m hoping season two delivers a bit more.

Summary
You’ve probably already seen the first season before watching, but if you haven’t then you’re in luck, because the first 25 minutes is dedicated to recapping it. After receiving a specific request, the crew head out north to rescue a group of adventurers who bit off more than they can chew. After reaching the last town they were seen in, the party of goblin grinders manage to take out a goblin nest. But in doing so, they discover a new and bigger threat residing up in an old mountain fortress. So, Goblin Slayer being the man he is of course has to take those guys out as well, and so comes up with another one of his crazy plans to wipe out every last goblin he sees.
Plot (7.3/10)
Goblins. This may come as a surprise, but it’s about Goblin Slayer slaying goblins. That’s about it. Slicing, dicing, burning, crushing, basically any way he can think of. It’s easy to follow, pretty predictable, you basically know they’re going to kill the goblins, the only thing you’re wondering though is how. Nevertheless, entertaining and portraying the story perfectly.
Characters (7.2/10)
Despite not having any real character development, a new character is introduced to add a bit of flavor I guess. That being said, I don’t really think there is any need for character development. It’s the same as the first season, you got the petite elf, some lizard man, a dwarf who is the token old guy, oh yeah and the busty sweet blonde, also the main character, an emotionally blunt suit of armor with a one track mind solely focused on exterminating the little green men. There is a new temporary recruit with goblin PTSD. Honestly, she’s kind of useless though.
Visuals (8.1)
Almost the same style as many other anime, but with a slight nuance I can’t quite put my finger on. It was consistent and the animation was smooth. There was some cgi, I know some don’t like that, but it actually fit well. The fight scenes were well laid out with a few well placed effects. Overall better than you would get from a show, but this is a movie/ova I guess, so it should be better.
Audio (7.4/10)
There isn’t much to say about the audio. It was good, but nothing good enough to note other than a few nice sound effects here and there. It did its job, and the music subtly, but aptly did its job well in the background.
Bingeable/Hype (8.0/10)
It had me wanting a next season, while also satisfying me enough to wait a little longer. I almost feel as if this was forgotten by watchers of the original, but I understand why it wouldn’t generate as much attention as a one and done ova. Nothing more to say on this.
Enjoyment (9.0/10)
My bias towards the first season and series as a whole may be clouding my judgment here, but personally I enjoyed it. I’m a simple guy and I’ll be the first to admit it doesn’t take a lot compared to other people to please me. Nevertheless, I came to enjoy and have some entertainment and I got what I wanted.
