80/100Really nice story to relax toContinue on AniListYotsukoto is a manga that has a really chill vibe while building up the magical world it takes place in.
Yotsukoto is a fairly short story about two apprentices that go looking after their master who disappears one day. Yotsuki is a kind and curious magician while Kotowari is a stoic and adept adventurer/maid. While there is an overarching plot and they do advance towards the end goal in every chapter, it still gives off a very slice of life feel as the two see and experience new things in the world. Since Yotsuki didn't have much time to leave her master's place, a lot of the things the encounter in the world she is seeing for the first time, like the readers. It's easy to fall into step with the feelings of awe and wonder that Yotsuki feels as you read on. So what makes this stand out from all of the other similar stories? Well I'd say that one of them is the really soft feel to the art. There aren't many hard lines to be found, and all the sharp edges are pretty rare too, which gives the manga a certain feel that a lot of more regularly drawn manga doesn't have. It blends perfectly with the themes found in Yotsukoto, primarily on the importance of being accepted and on friendship. There's nothing hard to grasp or difficult to swallow with Yotsukoto, which is pretty nice.
I also happen to really enjoy the magic system in this manga, which for Yotsuki revolves around the use of words. The way that the magic is portrayed whenever she uses it gives off a very child-like vibe. That being said, there is also a sort of power to be found in it, and if you take time to think about her powers you begin to realize how strong it actually is. It's a nice balance that fits the tone of the story.
The character designs for the mains I also find really nice, which is always a plus.
I feel like everything I've talked about for Yotsukoto is about the mood that it brings, but honestly I think that that is its biggest strength. It's something to read after a long day of work when you just want to relax. Overall, Yotsukoto is an amazing example of the personification of the word 'comfy': no harsh themes, really soft drawing, slice of life feel and great chemistry between leads. Everything just goes with the slow flow of the story, and it's nice to get gently pulled along with it. I wouldn't recommend this if you're looking for a deep type of story or if you want intense action, but this is a short read so I'd say you should give it a try anyways
